What policies bother me about Trump: repeal of Obamacare or Affordable Care Act, going after families of terrorists, stifling free press, building the wall, Muslim ban, nationwide stop and frisk, tax breaks for the wealthy. I think I haven't criticized Trump nearly as much as I should have, mostly because few were going after her so I blocked everything else out. His cabinet appointments and already his executive action do not bode well for us.

You know what, I know some of it is hype to an extent but some of the things that are going on do sound scary when you think just how far they can really take things. Like the stop and frisk and privacy rights, human rights and so on.

You know, one thing they missed in your article was where he was talking about how our education system was basically overflowing with cash but failing to teach our students.
Dont know which education system but, the ones I have seen barely pay teachers. Too underfunded for extra curricular activities etc.

That confused me too. I don't work for the DOE, but in two of my jobs I work closely with people who do. And that's certainly not the impression I got either.

Speaking of Trump and education, I don't know if you guys have seen it yet, but Trump's nomination for Education Secretary is thoroughly sickening in her lack of awareness of the issues in education, especially regarding the rights of students with disabilities.













At least if Trump was nominating knowledgeable, experienced, appropriate people for these roles it would be easier to swallow. But listening to these confirmations is just as absurd and surreal as the rest of his presidency. You can see the disbelief in the senators faces that they even have to take this woman seriously....

I think Sanders asked her the very important question that basically it all boils down to (and what keeps us all on topic here, since this thread is about our responsibility to recognize the corruption of our leaders) - had she and her family not donated so much to the Republican Party, would she even be sitting there as the education secretary nominee?

The other thing about funding of educational institutions, if you get a grant from the state, fed or where ever, you have to spend the money on whatever it is appropriated for. So if you got $1.7 million to say make building improvements (that you may or may not need) you're spending it on that even if you need new computers in labs or new books in the library. The other thing, and this is often the case with everything that gets annual funding, is if you get a set amount of funding and for some reason you don't use it all at the last minute you're spending the rest of the money on things that probably are not needed.

A good example, not education related, a road I live near was resurfaced twice in 5 years... why, because they needed to spend the money so that the county would get the same amount of funding next year. If you don't spend it you lose it. It is a bad practice with little oversight if any at all.

Of course when it comes to the overall picture of education I see that we're not teaching students to think like an engineer, we have great intellectuals, great thinkers. We're not teaching a whole lot of skill in many schools. So for many employers they're going to pass hiring someone right out of college because they lack hands on experience.

Even worse is K-12 and everyone wants to blame the teachers. It's not the teachers, it's the whole system of training students to do well on standardized tests.

I went to school with someone who is still very smart, got a perfect score on the SAT. Got accepted to Harvard, mind you this is coming from a small little town out here in the middle of no where. Unfortunately, he flunked out. Now working back home at a factory. It's a shame because I feel like they were more focused on making them do well on tests and getting into a prestigious school over learning a valuable skill set and have passion to do something they want to do.

I think we aren't allowing students enough unstructured time, we're teaching students that they need to be like everyone else. That's something early on.

I really think people ought to listen to what Steve Wozniak has to say about teaching and what we're doing wrong in the classroom. We really do need to turn out good engineers, good engineering is how we ended up with the computer revolution and why we have many of the things today.

Impossible for the next election cycle. Bill DeBlasio is a Democrat and so is she, and he is definitely seeking a second term. It would be another 4 years after that if anything, but I doubt she'd pursue it then.
