Quote:A massive shortage of detectives in the capital was feared to be fuelling the crime wave. Scotland Yard now has 800 unfilled detective posts, according to latest figures obtained by The Telegraph.
Over the past five years hundreds of experienced murder squad officers have been diverted to other roles, including historic sex abuse inquiries; the disappearance of Madeleine McCann; and phone hacking and payments to public officials. Scotland Yard’s specialist Trident squad, which dealt with gang killings, has also been disbanded.
The majority of investigations into historic sex abuse and the conduct of journalists have proved fruitless, with only a tiny percentage even making it to court.
Ken Marsh, the chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said: “We have had experienced detectives taken off murder squads, where they might be looking at gang-related crimes, and put into teams dealing with historic sex allegations, for example.
“We need a specific look at the impact this has had on the murder rate.â€Â
He added: “Knife crime is up because police have been told to cut stop and search. That means members of the public who are carrying knives are not being found as much, and they’re using those weapons. It really is that simple.â€Â
