I too suspect there is more to this story. A POA is acknowledged in any US hospital now days.

Something else happened, and I suspect it has to do with mental health treatment and the nurse or physician or who ever was in attendance as a medical professional most likely felt the presence of the partner was agitating or otherwise negatively affecting the patient.

Mental Health cases are handled differently than physical health ones.

People lie. Daughters lie for their fathers, fathers lie for their daughters.

There is the words: Research Medical Center denies the accusation, saying Roger was "disruptive and belligerent" and had to be escorted from the premises, according to a statement obtained by The Huffington Post.

Wearing of gloves, its getting to be more typical of officers. I have seen officers arresting people wearing latex gloves... It has more to do with protection of the officer of contagious diseases. If blood was involved, then yes gloves are going to be worn.

Lee and Roger were starting a fight, The nurse had the right to tell anyone to leave who the nurse felt may be agitating the patient the most.

Its mental health, not physical health. They are lucky they didn't all get shut out of the hospital.

I bet all of this made the depression better though.... Rolleyes

dfiant Wrote:If the bloke laying in the hospital bed comes out and says 'This is what happened' it will add weight to the story.

Right now, the eject man and his daughter are telling a story and as far as I am concerned, that is one sided and sensationalised reporting.

I never at any point said 'Homophobia is good, there should be more of it', all I am saying is I have my doubts.

Your apology accepted, but I still think Lalo is a bit of a prick for his attack and use of useless info and stats. Smile

Okay...first of all, I did not resort to name calling saying that you were acting like "a bit of a prick" or a "princess". You did that! Secondly, I didn't "twist your words, I quoted you! If you don't like seeing your words used in an argument, then don't write them. I can't imagine what you are thinking or where you are coming from. I can only respond to what I read.

Having said that, I guarantee that there is more to this story than what has been printed. If that was your point, that journalism is often one-sided, then it was a valid one. But that is not all that you said. Also, in regard to your statement about the "bloke in the hospital", he HAS come out and said that his lover is telling the truth. It has been recorded in other articles!

As for my qualifications on this particular subject? I am a nurse with over 20 years experience in three different states. I am an American citizen and know my rights and responsibilities under the law. Most importantly, I work in Quality Control in health care in a Medicare/Medicaid payee facility and have for the past ten years! My JOB is to know what CMS regulations apply in exactly these types of situations. And according to EVERYTHING that I have seen reported, this nurse was 100% wrong and should probably loose her job for NOT checking the POA status of the individuals, AND for escalating the situation. I come to that conclusion NOT from any emotional response to an article, but from the fact that I happen to work directly with these situations on a daily basis.

Contrary to your assertion that "people don't get treated badly solely because they are gay" and to Bowyn's assertion that "A POA is acknowledged in any US hospital now days", I have to respond that both of those assertions are absolutely incorrect. I have personal experiences dealing with BOTH situations many times over. Within my own organization I can report mistakes made regarding POA's on at least 15 occasions in the past year!!! It does happen, and it happens much more frequently than people realize.

Bowyn's other points are VERY valid. Psych treatment facilities do operate a bit differently than medical facilities. However, in the case as it is described (once again by numerous sources) a POA was removed from a situation which was instigated by the demands of a non-POA. If it was just a matter of the POA acting belligerent on his own, that would be a different story. But that is NOT what has been reported.

In the final analysis, we probably won't know what is going on with this story because when all of the facts come out the sensationalistic media will have probably moved on to another subject, and this one will quietly be handled in the courts. I would never disagree about that issue, or about how the media mishandles these issues, or that they are over-sensationalized. But that is very different from stating that these things just don't occur. If someone, anyone, takes that stance on a public forum, then I feel that I have every right, and in fact, a responsibility, to respond. If that makes me "a little prick" or a "princess" in your eyes, then that is your issue, not mine. I never back down from an argument or a confrontation when I feel that an injustice has been done, whether that be here or in real life. Belittling people through name-calling and insinuations about their masculinity is really contemptible, especially on a gay forum. It is also self-defeating because it lessens the strengths of your position and diverts attention from what you are trying to say.

I am not going to apologize for anything that I have posted in this thread, because , quite frankly, I believe that Mr. Tinkles and myself are the ones who are owed an apology. Our responses, although measured and without derogatory name calling, were strongly worded in response to a ridiculously strong statement ("People don't get treated badly solely because they are gay."). For anyone who HAS been in situations where they, or others, have been treated badly because they were gay, that sentence is extremely offensive. I reserve the right to respond to those types of statements whenever they occur. I have in the past, and I will continue to do so in the future.

Uhm, yes you have, you have used my words to mean something that I did not intend for it to mean. I am commenting on this story and this story only.

Quote: I can only respond to what I read.

You're INTERPRETATION of what you read.

Quote:As for my qualifications on this particular subject?
So does that mean a protologist 'qualifies' as an arsehole?

Quote:Contrary to your assertion that "people don't get treated badly solely because they are gay" and to Bowyn's assertion that "A POA is acknowledged in any US hospital now days"

If taking peoples comments out of context qualifies you as an expert, then you ARE an expert, just not an expert at what you think you are an expert at princess Wink

If you are going to get stuck on that single little statement and take it out of context of the story, then more power to you. The comment was made with this story in mind. I do not believe this man was treated badly JUST because he is GAY.

If you want to quote that and blow it all out of proportion and use the comment to mean something that clearly it does not mean and clearly i did not intend it to mean (I will give you a hint, I am GAY and I was bashed to within an inch of death as a teenager because i am GAY), then quiet clearly I am going to see and feel this as a personal attack and quiet clearly I am going to think you are a cunt Wink

Have a nice day princess.

If you indeed meant for your original statement to apply only to this situation, then I can apologize for the misunderstanding which has occurred because of it. However, your continuous verbal assaults really need to end. What are they accomplishing? I am not a moron, a princess, a cunt, a prick or any other demeaning filth that you choose to spew from your mouth. And just as you don't appreciate being misunderstood, I really don't appreciate being spoken to in that manner.

As for your prior experiences, I am very sorry that you had to go through that. It really hurts me very deeply to know that you have had to live through such hatred. But it is EXACTLY that type of event that spurs me into action, verbally, and on occasion, physically, to challenge people who hate and to defend others who are recipients of hate.

I do not know you. I cannot read your mind. I cannot see what is in your soul. I cannot assume anything about your history. So when I see a sentence that shows what I thought was a tremendous lack of compassion, yes, I am going to respond. I will take ownership of my response, but you must take ownership of your failure to adequately communicate what you wanted to say. Maybe, if we both take a step back, and reexamine what has been said, we can clarify this miscommunication. I hope so.

Family Of Roger Gorley, Gay Man Denied Hospital Visitation Rights, Set Up Legal Defense Fund
[/SIZE]

The family of a gay Missouri man who was denied hospital visitation rights when trying to see his sick partner and subsequently arrested has set up a legal defense fund.

Roger Gorley was arrested after he refused to leave the bedside of his partner, Allen Mansell, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., on April 9. Gorley's daughter, Amanda Brown, claims the Kansas City police mistreated her father and that the hospital is guilty of discrimination. Research Medical Center has denied discriminating based on sexual orientation.
Brown set up a fund for donations on GoFundMe.com.

"Roger Gorley was arrested and forcibly removed from his husband's bedside at Research Medical Center in Kansas City Missouri," reads the petition. "Please help support Allen Mansell and Roger Gorley cover their legal fees and medical bills due to this action on GoFundMe.com to collect money for her father's legal defense."

Around $2,000 has been collected thus far, halfway to the goal of $5,000.

In her blog on We Are Atheism, Brown alleges that Gorley -- who is in a civil union with Mansell and has Power of Attorney to make medical decisions -- was asked to leave the hospital by Mansell's brother, Lee Mansell. The two began to fight and then a nurse demanded Gorley exit the room. When he refused, she called security to escort him out, even though Allen requested his partner stay. Hospital officials claimed that it was this fight that led to Gorley's removal.

She also claims that the Kansas City Police "responded with [brute] and excessive force" when they were attempting to apprehend him. A spokesperson for the police department previously denied the allegations to The Huffington Post.

But Brown told the New Civil Rights Movement that Gorley suffered cuts on his ring finger, a swollen wrist and back pain. He also needs to have his hearing aids repaired.

In her blog post, she claimed they are currently working with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Still, hospital officials continue to deny the allegations against them.

“When the nurse went in to ask them to please quiet down and please stop this and they continued, and every time they stepped out it would get escalated, so she stepped back in and asked them to remove themselves for the sake of the patient at the moment,” Rob Dyer of Hospital Corporation of America, parent company of Research Medical Center, told Fox's WDAF. “He [Gorley] and the patient’s brother were fighting in the patient’s room very loudly, very crassly, inappropriate language."

Lee has since been called a homophobe and received death threats. He admitted that the fight did get "heated," but insists that he loves Gorley like his own brother.

"I was kind of scared for him, and I was upset for Allen," he told NBC station KSHB. "I love Roger like I do my brother... it's heart-wrenching for me to see my brother's husband being taken away."

Sounds like to me, that the brother in law started the whole thing for some reason.
He also sounds like a bullshit artist.
