The press is oddlly silent concerning the reactions of the conservatives.

Just from academic experience only, it has seemed historically that "socialised medicine" are such filthy words in America, supporters are obviously "Communists". But as the late great British Socialist Tony Benn once said- if you can afford to kill a million people, you can afford to cure a million people. As in, if tax revenue can go on war, it can go on health.

In Britain we are still lucky to have the NHS, although there are always fears of privatisation. Although wait lists can be long, to receive the care that we do, we are very lucky.

Ironically, it was American money that funded the British NHS in the form of the Truman Plan and Marshall Aid after WWII.

Probably not relevant to the debates just the reflections of a left wing socialist.

Well, Jesus knows there are still holdouts, but that mode of thought is not nearly as prevalent as it once was (though I don't have the numbers for you, sorry). Concerning this abandoned bill, however, the overwhelming majority opposed it simply because it meant less coverage for less people.

That's good to hear that attitudes are shifting! When the medicine and technology are available, they should be as universal possible. Let's hope this gets resolved favourably in the people's favour.
