Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003), known as Celia Cruz, was a Cuban singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century. Cruz rose to fame in Cuba during the 1950s as a singer of guarachas, earning the nickname "La Guarachera de Cuba". In the following decades, she became known internationally as the "Queen of Salsa" or "The Queen of Latin Music" due to her contributions to Latin music in the United States.

Her musical legacy is made up of a total of 37 studio albums, as well as numerous live albums and collaborations. Throughout her career, she was awarded numerous prizes and distinctions, including two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. In addition to her prolific career in music, Cruz also made several appearances as an actress in movies and telenovelas. Her catchphrase ¡Azúcar! (Sugar!) has become one of the most recognizable symbols of salsa music.

No need to add this diva to the list, but I'm sure most have not heard of her, so I'm just giving her some play.  She's also performed with the prior mentioned Celia Cruz.



Her name is India (or La India) and she got her start in the late 80s, performing Latin freestyle music.  Her first song was "Dancing on The Fire", and it was an immediate hit.  She released her debut CD, "Breaking Night" and it had two more hit singles, "Right From The Start" and "Lover Who Rocks You All Night".

She recorded vocals for the Jellybean single "Mirage", which became a big club hit.  She later added her vocals to the hit "Love & Happiness", which was produced by Little Louie Vega.

At this point she decided to leave the freestyle/house/club genres, and focus on Salsa music, and became known as the "Princess of Salsa".

The video is her first song.  There is no official video for it, so it's just a static image, but if you listen through to the end, you can hear her vocal abilities.

It will always be Diana Ross for me - sentimental reasons. I'd worship at her alter if she needed me to.

I like in this video how she trusted he audience to catch her - she talked about it before in an interview.
