New Aquarium
#21
@Cridders88 That's the thing, the fish looks like its starved as it's much smaller....color looks fine, just behavior is whacked. At any rate, losing one I can live with just want to be sure that it isn't bacterial or a parasite that is going to spread.

I once tried doing a marine tank with that 10 gallon and boy was that a bad idea. Not only did I have no idea about the nitrogen cycle I had people at the pet store give me horrible advice, it's a wonder the fish lived as long as they did. That was about 10-12 years ago, I honestly am not sure how far back it was that I tried all that.

@Cridders88 I didn't know you had an aquarium too. Looks amazing!

I'm kind of jealous of you guys. I'd love an aquarium. Maybe when I get my new dream house, and de-clutter my life...

Sometimes it is really hard to diagnose. I think you have done the right thing seperating it just in case.

I've never been daring enough for marine! I think I was put off as I did work experience in a fish store as a teen and I accidentally killed a Lionfish by miscalculating the salt levels during the daily checks. I think I'll stick to tropical! Haha.

The advice you can get from some fish stores is awful. I have found one that has people working there that seem to care for the welfare of the fish and know their stuff, so I only go there for fish and supplies. Places like that are all too rare sadly. As for the stores that give bad advice, I think it is either staff not really having enough knowledge or only being interested in the sale and not caring whether the fish live or die afterwards.

Thanks Steve Smile. Do it! Honestly, it is so rewarding. I find myself watching the fish sometimes for long periods of time. It's very soothing Smile.

@Bookworm You can probably do a 10 gallon without much hassle...at least on the physical side of things. Just have to be careful and only put in a couple fish at the beginning or you get the big ammonia spike like I did but I also have plants that are dying back and root tabs so who knows lol. A betta will do really well in a 10 gallon and it is a small enough tank you can put just about anywhere.

Oh yeah I don't think I replied about the corydora's I'm considering. I thinking about doing the pygmy corydora, they're small, they school so I can put a bunch in the 55 gallon. I also don't have to worry about them getting big. Kind of the theme about bad advice, the pet store years ago, pretty sure sold me a common pleco...mind you all I had was a 10 gallon and it got huge and started eating fish. So yeah glad we have youtube and channels like Aquarium Co-op and whatnot.

@InbetweenDreams  Yes, it's definitely something I'll consider in the future. I want to move first though, I hate where I'm at right now. I'll need to do plenty research too. I wouldn't want to murder my first batch of fish.

Incidentally, your flag suggests you've moved to Albania  Big Grin

I finally got somewhere on the aquarium. I decided that I would do south american stuff that likes acidic soft water. So I went with Fluval stratum for substrate and various plants, probably not all native to South America but they all look cool. I might do some CO2 but not sure if it will be needed or not. I got 14 neon tetras (technically one is a "green" neon tetra or also known as a false neon tetra), 10 fire ember tetras and 10 panda corydoras and of course the one betta fish. The Fluval Plant 3.0 should hopefully arrive tomorrow so I'll actually have good lighting.

So, I made a short video about my tank...Totally unprepared and definitely bad at doing these sort of things.

Well going to be doing another update on the tank soon, also got some plans to do an outdoor mini-pond with guppies once the weather warms up some. I'm thinking about doing more YouTube videos just for the heck of it (I really doubt I will become YouTube famous or anything). So over the course of several months I have bought a couple of those small CO2 kits by Fluval. In short the tanks go empty in less than a week and at the cost it is insanely uneconomical at $18 per CO2 tank which is a whopping 45g.

Tell me now that I don't have a face for a radio and a voice for print.

@InbetweenDreams

The tanks are looking good man Smile. That was a really useful video, I have considered Co2 before and shall probably give those a swerve then lol. To be fair, I use ferts only and my plants do fairly well, some better than others though admittedly. My Vallisneria grow like crazy especially. I use the TNC Complete fertliser, which I have had better results than all the other ferts I've tried.

Nice to see your tanks coming on well Smile
