Returning to work after the pandemic

An article in Bloomberg states that a significant number of people who have been working remotely over the last year are telling their bosses to take this job and shove it instead of returning to the rat race as employers recall them to the office.

Hmm... I know every restaurant around is short handed. I know it is a complicated issue.

I've heard all sort of things from the "bleeding heart" Libertarians about how no one wants to work and just wants a government handout.

First, anyone who is smart will take the extra money than go work at a crap job for $10/hr... Sure, it will come to an end at some point but I certainly am not blaming people for taking the better deal. Should we blame the government for making it easier for people to get unemployment, or get more assistance? No, I don't think that's right either. Frankly, I think that anyone working a full time job should be able to make ends meet. This idea that people have to work a 2nd job or a 3rd job just to pay the rent is insane.

I have been told that we're starting to do a hybrid type of office, for July and August, one or two days in the office, the other three days at home.

Then, in September, back to the office full time.

I'm thinking this is happening more in higher income jobs where skills are more in demand. I'm wondering if some companies will take the path of offering employees the option to continue working remotely and use it as a competitive advantage over those who insist on taking a hard line.

I can see my office going down the hybrid route too. I'm still working from home, and we still have staff off on furlough leave.

There's been no mention at all of us going back in to the office anytime soon. The company I work for has really taken a financial hit these last 12 months, so they are doing everything they can to keep costs down right now. I'll probably still be working from home until Christmas at this rate.

I admit that I have mixed feelings about it. I will miss not having a commute, but I already miss my coworkers, so it will be good to see them again.

I like the idea of working from home. But in my profession, that is not possible. Having never experienced working from home, I don't know how I'd get on. The social aspect would be lacking for sure.

I'm thinking the social aspect of work might have a lot to do with this as well. People who didn't particularly like their co-workers have likely enjoyed the hiatus from the office more than most and aren't particularly looking forward to returning. Those who liked their co-workers are probably looking forward to returning despite the return to commuting.
