'Genocidal': Transgender people begin to flee states with anti-LGBTQ laws

By:  Kiara Alfonseca - June 11, 2023

When Texas officials announced their intentions to launch child abuse investigations involving people who provide gender-affirming care for their transgender children, Susan’s heart dropped.

Susan has a 7-year-old transgender daughter, Elsa, whose parents asked that she be referred to by a pseudonym for safety reasons, who they say may one day need such care.

Elsa's parents describe her as wise beyond her years. She had expressed that she was a girl from an early age and guided her parents through her gender journey – asking to wear dresses, change her name, and to be referred to as a “daughter” by her parents.

“When she was 3, one day, she told me, ‘I'm a girl person,’” Susan said in an interview with ABC News. It was National Daughters Day, “and she said, ‘Can I be your daughter?’ – which made me cry.”

Susan and her husband Brian, who asked that their last names not be used for safety reasons, decided the family needed to move out of Texas in light of the child abuse investigation threats. They say they weren’t sure how far the government would go to separate families like their own or affect Elsa’s access to care as she gets older.

Why can’t homophobes and transphobes just accept us and not hate us for being us

I wish there were an answer that would lead to the solution to all these things, but I'm afraid I don't. People are pretty awful, easy to manipulate, cruel, egotistical, selfish and hypocritical.

I've browsed this site occasionally, but this post inspired me to register. My husband and I have 2 kids, and we're in the process of moving away from Florida because it isn't safe here anymore.

My 5 year old son was told that he isn't allowed to talk about his family at school because it might upset other kids. My 9 year old daughter, who's in a program for gifted children, has had her school library decimated and she's been sent home twice for bringing "contraband" books to school. We thought about homeschooling them, but I was afraid it might elicit a response from Children's Services - maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't think so.

This wasn't an easy decision - we love our home here, our friends, and my husband has a lot of business connections here. But our kids are more important. We don't want them growing up thinking there's something wrong with them and their family. Yhe political situation here is frightening, if people like Ron DeSantis and Matt Gates had their way, we wouldn't be allowed to keep our children.

I'm glad to see that others are talking about this. It's terrifying.

That is so sad to read Kevin. I am sorry you are having to face this hardship, it isn't remotely fair. It sounds as if you are doing the right thing though. I hope, wherever you go, you and your family feel safer and don't face such prejudice.
