DC’s 2023 Pride collection of books and comics will be available at your local comic book shop, bookstore, library, and beyond, delivering bold stories, brave characters, and more pride than ever. DC Pride 2023 #1, DC’s annual anthology containing all-new stories spotlighting LGBTQIA+ fan favorites, will be published on May 30. The 104-page Prestige format comic will feature an introduction by Phil Jimenez, a main cover by Mateus Manhanini, and open-to-order variant covers by Gabriel Picolo (wraparound), Jen Bartel (spot foil), and Oscar Vega (cardstock).

The DC Book of Pride Is a Tribute to LGBTQ+ Superheroes Throughout History

For Jadzia Axelrod, the galaxy’s the limit for what’s possible — and she wants every queer, superhero-loving kid to feel that way, too.

After writing breakout hit graphic novel Galaxy: The Prettiest Star with artist Jess Taylor in 2022, Axelrod is continuing to make waves at DC Comics, where she’s getting ready to launch her anticipated Hawkgirl ongoing series this summer. But just in time for Pride Month, Axelrod has another, very special project hitting shelves via the children’s publisher DK: The DC Book of Pride, an illustrated guide to 57 LGBTQ+ characters across DC’s history, stretching from the very first Green Lantern created in 1940 to new heroes who just debuted in the past year.

Intended for younger readers, the format of DC Book of Pride will be immediately familiar to anyone who grew up flipping through DK’s visually rich encyclopedias and reference books. Each entry features key art of a hero or villain from one of their published appearances, along with a quote that sums up the character’s personality, information about their first appearance and notable associations, and of course, a new biography written by Axelrod. (There’s even a handy glossary in the back, where young readers can learn the definition of “intersex” and “queer” alongside equally essential terms like “Speed Force” and “Teen Titans Academy.”)
