My Job, my future, and making a change.
#1
I work for on Oil company. I was due back at work yesterday and I didn't go. The reason I failed to return work was on Monday they called me and told me I was being sent to Nigeria.
The last time I went there I had to pay 300 dollars and my laptop to keep from being held hostage.( I hope they enjoyed the gay porn I had stored on my laptop as well as the extremely personal photos I took of myself to tease my boyfriendRofl)
The time before that I had to go fill out an incident report at a pipeline that exploded after people were stealing fuel from it.
I have never forgotten those burnt alive bodies. I can still see it like it happened yesterday.
They promised me I would not have to go back there, but since I took a month leave after I broke up with my boyfriend, they feel I owe them a favor.
I have one week to decide before they terminate me.
I looked at my savings and I can survive for about 6 months without going in debt.
I have dreams and want to change my life.
I need advice.

What are your dreams? How do you want to change your life? How does your current job stop you from doing that?

Clearly, given that your job involves being sent of to various corners of the world the pay should include an element of 'danger / inconvenience money' beyond what you might get in a job that kept you in the US. Is that money worth it for you?

What alternative work do you want? Do you think it will be easy to find, might it be easier in a year or two when the economy improves? Might you be better off staying with your current employer while you plot your exit? On the other hand is the prospect of going back to Nigeria so bad that, frankly, it would be better to leave now than later?

Just my tuppence worth.

I wanna attend the Cordon bleu and become a chef or design gardens.
Attending the Cordon Bleu would mean going to Atlanta or Dallas. Horticulture would mean only traveling to Baton Rouge to attend LSU.
My ultimate dream is to buy the ten acres adjacent to my property and start a vineyard. I already have 4 hybrid Boston Concords that are thriving and there are two vineyards in my Parish that are successful.

Being a soldier in the defense of your nation is totally selfless and noble.
I may have never said this, but I have a world of respect for you.

Risking your life so some slob can fill up his 9 mile to the gallon SUV, not so noble:tongue:
Louisiana is an oil state and that's why I work for an oil company. It's the best job you can get around here.

Just a couple of random thoughts. Cookery involves a lot of anti-social working hours, horticulture involves being outside in all weathers.

I love being outdoors.
I would be outside right now if I weren't waiting for a phone call to pick up my cousin.
As for anti-social working hours,,, let's see.. Oh I know I have missed every Christmas, and New Years eve for the last three years due to my current job.
As well as Halloween and my birthday:eek:

I was thinking more of regular evenings and weekends rather than special events. But it only matters if you think it matters.

make the change and follow your dream (easy for us to say though)

if your living in an oil state and things dont work out would it still be possible to go back workin for another petrol company seen as u already have the skills for that - if the answers yes then go learn to be a chef mate or garden design, take the plunge and go go for it
