Now let me get this right...
You are kidnapped, held for ransom, witness something so horrific you can still see it today (that seems like some sort of mental scar to me) and loose a ton of porn and self pics... bringing on a promise never to be sent there again.
You take off a month due to personal reasons, painful loss...
And your company believes you now owe them on a promise they made...
If this is all how your company thinks of ya and youre still considering staying - then I am missing something

Jobs are a bit thin on the ground all over the world at the moment so spending a few years learning a new trade sounds like a good idea if you have the funds to last.
I have always followed my dreams and choped and changed my life/job quite a few times.
at 16:
I left school and went to college to learn interior decorating and designfor 2 years.
at 18:
I moved to the south of France and cleaned yachts for 8 months in the sunshine.
at 19:
after returning to the uk, I worked the summer for a gardening company then flew to Barcelona and walked across spain, france and Italy crossing the Alps on foot in mid winter with my brother.
at 21:
started my own business landscaping gardens which I ran for 7 years then sold and spent the profit on partying hard for 6 months and taking 2 months of hollidays.
at 28:
became a postman for 6 years which i loved up until I hurt my back.
at 34:
Moved to Spain with my partner opened a bar which we ran for 18 months but had to close when this recession hit and we had to return to the UK.
which is where I am now at 36 unemployed but optimistic and excited about the next chapter in my life.
My next dream is to Ride my motorcycle from Alaska to chilli on the adventure of a lifetime but its gonna cost a pretty penny so head down for a few years working is the order of the day (with a few months walking across spain for charity maybe).
follow your dreams, follow your heart it will keep you young minded yet wise to the world.

Know it's a bit late now, but just wanted to say i think you shoiuld go for it, too.
Also moving somewhere new can be really good way of clearing the cobwebs out. And if you run low on funds whilst embarking on your new adventure, there are plenty of easy (if slightly seedy) ways to make a pretty penny or two...
The only thing that should hold you back from doing something new is if it isn't what you want from your life. If you're settled where you are, then don't.
