I Need your BRAINS!
#1
Heya,

I'm currently doing a Presentation about Stereo Types.

I've picked Sexuality - Gays & Lesbians.

However I need to know a few things
-Has there been any press laws passed for Sexuality?
-2 Gay Characters which show "Stereo Typing"
-Any papers which have been Homophobic in the past etc?

Not quite sure what you mean by the first two, but I assume you are aware of the recent huge fuss over this article. Check out the comments elsewhere on this site.

However did we manage to cope with doing our own homework in the old days? Rolleyes

Do you mean newspapers or legislation?

If you mean legislation then there was always the infamous Section 28 of the Local Government act 1988 - now repealed.

There is existing case-law in which certain sexual acts were ruled to be non-criminal when conducted between heterosexuals, but where homosexual men were convicted of a criminal offence for the same act.

If you mean newspapers...goodness...take your pic. Broadsheets and tabloids can be cited. Whether it is overtly homophobic reports or the more subtle support of "pro-family" groups.

In 2003, the United States Supreme Court determined that Sodomy Laws were unconstitutional. This landmark case was based on the Lawrence vs. Texas decision which determined that

Responding to a reported weapons disturbance in a private residence, Houston police entered petitioner Lawrence’s apartment and saw him and another adult man, petitioner Garner, engaging in a private, consensual sexual act. Petitioners were arrested and convicted of deviate sexual intercourse in violation of a Texas statute forbidding two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct. In affirming, the State Court of Appeals held, inter alia, that the statute was not unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Held: The Texas statute making it a crime for two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct violates the Due Process Clause. Pp. 3—18.

LAWRENCE V. TEXAS

For two gay characters that fit stereotypes, I can give you a list. Two of the most commonly well known are Will and Jack from Will and Grace. You can also look toward Xander from Drawn Together.

As far as homophobic articles go, look toward anything that comes out of the Religious Right or Fox News.

The information you are looking for is very common. All you need to do is look for it.

Good luck on your paper.

You might have a look at the current issue of GT which looks at the Daily Mail's attitude to all things homo. You could probably base your presentation around that.
