Nickolai Alekseev is one of the bravest people in Europe in my view. Once again the mayor of Moscow has managed to outlaw Pride. Previous years have seen many, including Mr Alekseev and Peter Tatchell on the receiving end of police violence to make their point. GLBT support groups in Russia are appealing to the president and the prime minister to intervene. In the meantime it looks as though a few more heads are risking being cracked tomorrow by the police and marchers subjected to attack by neo-Nazis while the authorities stand back and let it happen.

European embassies have applied pressure to the authorities in other eastern European states and even sent representatives to march in other Pride Parades, but that is not the case in Russia. I wonder why ... ?
