My introduction is a question.

Background: I'm from southern Alabama. I lived most of my life here except when I was in the U.S. Air Force, and lived a year in Texas and a year in England. I do get high in various ways with numerous people. Well - there was about 7 of us sitting around (everyone from the same place as me) and I was the only gay person so someone asked me to define the gay culture/community. I tried to define it from my point of view - but I was wondering what the collective definition would be. So basically the question is. What IS the gay culture/community?

Hi...welcome! It is a tough one as it is impossible to define million of individuals except by their sexuality which is the thing we have in common...so I would keep it simple because after the common bond of sexuality we are unique and individualistic as our heterosexual counterparts.

I don't believe that there is any single gay culture or community, there is a variety of cultures and communities. Also not all gays and lesbians are members of a gay community.

Gay culture and "the gay community" are terms generally used by the straight media that want to pigeon-hole us, the better to demonise us.

i have no idea wot the gay culture is - i live my life like everyone around me - got to football, play guitar, have barbys, play xbox, worry that i screwed up at work etc etc etc - just like everyone else, only differece is i like guys - i just live life, i dont think i should be pigeon holed like Marsh says, i suppose places like san fran has a gay community because there's a large gay population to warrant it - but not in sunny yorkshire UK :biggrin:

Anyway Yorkshire would need it's own gay culture ;o)
