The term 'legal wedding' is a bit misleading. It's a marriage that is recognised in D.C., Massachusetts, Iowa, etc., or rather would be if they lived in one of those states. It's still completely unrecognised in Texas.
It's a clever way of avoiding having to ask family and friends to travel all the way to D.C. However I don't think it's a meaningful punch in the face for the homophobic Texas state government.
