Growing Prejudice?

Conservatives Declare War on "Gay" | News | The Advocate

Difficult for gays to be anti-Christian when Christ never mentioned anything about same sex attraction... It really is based on very little evidence... What they possibly mean is counter-biblical? But certainly not ANTI-Christian...
They are guilty of performing a much worse anti-Christian sin or crime by NOT LOVING THEIR NEIGHBOURS as themselves, but maybe they don't love themselves....?

Indeed... but they want to use words like Anti-Christian to make gays seem like bad people, even though it's of course very false as many people are both gay and Christian, in addition to the points you made

Sometimes I wonder if Jesus Christ would have anything particular to say about same sex relationships. After all wasn't he very close to one of his disciples? Some say he may have loved him in a closer way than we are generally told to think.

Quote:Attendees at the Awakening conference for social conservatives this past weekend suggested that their fight begins with changing the terms of debate, namely, swapping the word “gay” for alternatives including “sodomy” and “anti-Christian.”

Sofia Resnick of The American Independent reports on the conference held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., where one session focused on finding another term for “gay.” Panelists included Ryan Sorba, chairman of the Young Conservatives of California; Greg Quinlan, president of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays; and Liberty University dean Matt Barber.

Sorba said, “‘Gay’ is a left-wing sociopolitical construct designed to create grounds for fundamental rights [based on] whimsical capricious desires. Gay identity does not exist.”

Wow, almost sounds like we're all anti-christs.Rolleyes

So the only way they think they can get people on their side is to vilify us?
It must suck to be on the illogical side of this rights movement. The side that has little supporting evidence for why they are against it bar an ancient book.

Denial is a powerful thing huh?

Yes, they are desperate as more and more polls show a growing acceptance of gays and people in favor of same-sex marriages - which is good. But I still feel it's important to bring all this to light, mainly because as silly as this sounds to all of us, if enough kids are being taught this sort of thing, then we'll end up in a society where people are even more opposed to homosexuality than before.

There's a reason the folks that buy in the tea party movement are also orchestrating more home school.

I'm not sure about across the nation but I know in Minnesota, religious and anti-gay band/group You Can Run But You Cannot Hide performs in public schools - what if kids enjoy the performances, then listens to their anti-gay messages on radio etc? (this is also the group that a Target-supported politician had ties to and why some had called for a boycott of that retail chain despite their previous gay-friendly status)

Glenn Beck may be leaving FOX News, but he said on his radio show that he plans to develop new ways to get information to the youth of America by putting together a research team to "utilize idle brains" (retired CIA agents, PhDs, etc)

And I've never been able to bring myself to watch Jesus Camp but saw a news segment on it once and that was enough to leave me a bit scared

Anyway... things are so much better now than they ever were, and I think it helps to have people like Ellen and shows like Glee and Modern Family, etc.. More and more young are coming out at an early age as a result, which in turn helps our youth realize that "hey my friend is still a good person", etc. But we can't let our guard down, because if we do we'll find that the tactics of the religious right have been left unfought.

Seeing how organizations like NOM could come into my state and get justices ousted just because of the same-sex ruling has shaken me... I don't always know what to do, especially when I don't have much in terms of personal resources, but I know there's a lot of good organizations out there to support as I can; gay-friendly politicians to vote for as I can; etc; and I'll keep trying to make a difference as I can here and there.

A Tennessee Senate committee Wednesday approved a bill that will prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms. Though it may not pass the whole senate, current law already prohibits such instruction by deeming it a misdemeanor to teach any sex education that is not part of the "family life curriculum" adopted by the state Board of Education.

While I don't think homosexuality should be "taught" per se, I do think it's dangerous to ban the usage of the words altogether as certainly many youth struggle with the issue before they get to 9th grade and might need to talk to an educator if that seems like a better option than one's home life.

Around 13-14 years old.

I would pity the teacher who had a child of a lesbian or gay couple in their class. They would have to essentially deny the obvious existence of the home-life of that child.

Thought that was great. George Takei via Twitter: "TN bill will prevent teachers from using the word "gay" in class. In response, I'm lending them my name: "It's okay to be Takei.""
