I'm not sure about anglo-countries, but this 1988 song by a Spanish group was the first with an openly homosexual topic to reach the top one and retain it for weeks.

It reached top one in France, Spain and basically all of Latin America

All these countries have a strong Catholic culture so it was pretty ground breaking stuff..

particularly significant were the cases of Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua where homosexuality was still penalized by law.

the song is about a lesbian couple's fears and fights.
