btw, It is rather interesting that I now HATE rock but guess this is rock and remember how much I loved this song and even loved rock at this time. What happened?

Like the Stones... I read an article saying their past decade of music wasnt that bad... really?[/COLOR]

Thanks, Rychard Remybussi may I bring this full circle. You gave us The Runaways singing Slade, here is Slade singing Run Run Away (well, okay, maybe not their best song but it's as close as I could get Wink )

The problem with rock music is that so much of it is 2-dimensional and many artists have not pushed the boundaries in recent years. The form has more or less fossilised. Just as I remember a real sense of excitement in the 1960s at the imminent release of every new Beatles song (what would they sound like this time?) Top of the Pops in the 1970s was an event. Bands like Slade, Wizzard and Sparks made every appearance a real occasion. Of those three bands only Sparks have gone on to be consistently interesting and are even now continuing to do things differently. I can't think of many bands of whom I could say that their 20th album was their best work to date (they may have just released their 22nd album, but they are allowed a little wriggle room!). And no, I don't think Dave Hill was Lady Gaga's dad!

Rock music just like many of form of music have been taken over by the money men of the record industry, most bands and solo artists are tied to making commerical songs which makes money for the record companies.
During the 60s and 70s the bands were making the music, not being controlled or manufactured by the record companies like now with the boy/girl bands.

Each decade does produce good music but not in every areas of music. The 90s and the last decade were not very good for pop music, but produced some good Gothic Metal groups and songs . Also came were some good chill out music, it does depend on what type of music you like.

'tis why I like Electronic music. (not referring to Cascada and the like here).

I am talking the likes of Autechre - who make music that is art.
Brian Eno - he makes music a science/technology experiment.
Other such underground or relatively unknown producers who are not "Popular" for the reason that their music actually requires more of a response than head banging or waving your arms in the air.

Not strictly true. Artists may have appeared to have more freedom, but that didn't prevent music from being "manufactured". The Brill Building, Tin Pan Alley and Denmark Street are examples from the USA and the UK of what can only be described as music factories (although some of them sounded closer to being music sweat shops  ) where songs and artists were churned out at great speed and the product (whether human or intellectual) was often controlled quite ruthlessly. Violence was not unknown.

The Monkees were my first musical obsession independent of the music of my parents' generation and I saw them perform in London in 1967 (I say "saw" because hearing them was an impossibility). No one can argue they weren't a manufactured boy band. The management and production team put every obstacle in their way to prevent them writing their own songs and performing on their own recordings. When The Monkees finally began to get their own way Don Kirshner resorted to inventing fake bands like The Archies, so he could have complete control over the input and output of a band!

I agree with Rychard though that it is the inventiveness of creative artists who bypass traditional management and, for a while, often manage to produce something fresh and new. No one takes any notice until someone decides there is money to be made. In the 70s practically anyone who could wield a guitar seemed to be signed up at sometime although by the time someone saw punk as a commercial opportunity even the ability to play didn't seem to matter.
