Pet Sounds having become my new favorite album of all time, I've reassessed the merits of the Flaming Lips' latter albums like The Soft Bulletin and especially At War With the Mystics, both having something of a Pet Sounds influence. The latter hasn't been a favorite of mine until recently, when I learned to deeply appreciate the straightforward, direct, stripped down nature of the album; I've come to realize that musically and lyrically it is the band's most direct and honest expression of their overall philosophy on life, with as few frills as possible. It's such a good album and I regret not being able to appreciate it as fully in the past as I do now.










These songs, especially the middle one, can bring me to tears with their forthright honesty and unpretentious expression of the darkness and brightness that comes with being alive. Plus the music's groovy and beautiful.

Great choice, East I only ever saw War perform live once, but they were stunning. I really like the work Eric Burden did with them. You prompted me to look up some YouTubes and I came across this one I had no idea existed - War, Eric Burden and Jimi Hendrix (who turned up to watch the gig and was invited onstage) two or three days before he died.
