Just a practical thought, given that there other romantic gay guys out there, are there any social venues that would improve your chances of meeting them? Perhaps gay societies/clubs rather than bars?

When I went to college, I tried to change who I was, and I regret it. I tried to be overly effeminate or "act gay" just to fit in. Ironically, I never found anyone being like that, just a bunch of shallow people who acted like being gay was a lifestyle, and not a simple part of what makes them, them. Changing who you are won't get you anywhere, and you'll end up being untrue to yourself. And think about it this way when you think of gay men being nothing but shallow: you're not, so there must be others like you. Best of luck to you, and I hope you find what you're looking for.
