Hi I don't think I said that this happening was a good thing - I said the show GLEE has had some major stars on and sweetlad disagreed - Britney is a Mega star and her life how it went down hill was something that in the whole meaning of the word made her more famous than she was before.
fame/fām/
Noun: The condition of being known or talked about by many people,
That just before someone else posts about the fame comment - the whole 'famous' thing is about being known and her life shot into the media at that point making her well known and spoken about - like many other 'Stars' that go through bad situations.
So I would appreciate it if before you try to make a fuss about a comment I make, that you take the comment in the correct context - The thread is about GLEE and not about Britney - I simply stated she was a guest star that featured on and when it was disagreed that she is a mega star I pointed out why she was and about the things in her life that threw her into the media

Not really, no. There is a very health mixture of good and evil depicted within complex characters.

Sure, some stuff is fomulaic or crude, but television can very much be a thinking man's entertainment with great explorations into the human mind and character of man/woman explored. Unlike film, television often gives the chance to see more in-depth the effects of something, and some of the most powerful stuff I've ever seen has been on television - Margo's rape on As the World Turns when I was just a kid; Bailey's alcoholism on Party of Five while I was in high school; shows like Sports Night, Buffy, The Wire, Battlestar Galactica remake; currently shows such as The Good Wife and SVU... and I would include Glee here because it does bring up lots to think about on issues like bullying, popularity/fitting in, etc (though I think their "special" eps on drinking and sex kind of ended up sucking, but the teen pregnancy in season 1 and Santana's confusion in season 2 were played well).
Okay, so I guess I also agree with you that a lot of popular shows aren't thinking men's entertainment - I already mentioned Jersey Shore (which I've never seen) but also CSI: Miami; Two and a Half Men; Bravo's Housewives series; etc. But television has always been my favorite medium for its power to explore issues over time and I definitely quibble with those that only see TV as junk

The fact that all this happened to her, and it has been witnessed all around the world like some kind of soap opera, publicity... this is a good thing? Bad stuff like this happens in the world to people all the time... MINUS the press. I'm surrounded by people in difficult (sometimes dire) situations every day in my work. The only reason Britney got press is because she is an "attractive" "singer". Neither of which are true. She is just another carbon copy popstar wise, and another victim of fame. No dignity, no pride, no privacy. But apparently we love that kind of thing these days... it is what makes for "great entertainment"... it is what makes a "mega star" I feel sorry for her, this is not positive. I don't look at her as a mega star, something the world should be greatful for. Unless, I suppose, you could look at her as an example of "what not to do".
As for Glee, I have never felt compelled to get into it.
What boundaries did she break? She was as manufactured a piece of plastic as any child's toy. I feel sorry for her as a person and I can sympathize with her, but she was never a musician, never an artist, only an entertainer.
Cardiganwearer Wrote:There may be good television about, but it needs to be considered in the context of the thousands of hours put out worldwide each day. There probably isn't another art form/entertainment that has such a poor ratio of rubbish to quality.
Also, those bits of television that do make a point, and I'm thinking of drama in particular, make that point because the producers have made it issue driven. At one stage, back in the day (and I'll concede that my memory may be coloured somewhat on this) issues arose out of character and narrative. For a (poor) example of the subversion of this principle, off the top of my head, My Family, a british sitcom (created by an American) has run 11 seasons, ten too many in a lot of people's view. One of the characters came out as gay in series 10, apropos of nothing with nothing in his former story to suggest this.
Drama producers just do this nonsense and get away with it. The reason this stuff gets watched and people like it is that we all like narrative, we turn our own experiences and those of other people into stories to help us understand the world about us; narrative is central to our perception of our world. Then these people go and f%ck about with it, is it any surprise that the world becomes more dystopian day by day?
Sorry, got into a rant there, finished nowmile:

I turned mine off in 2007 and I feel I better off..
Twazzle Wrote:I think it depends on the type of shows you are into because the ones you've shown are similar in the genre I think :p Well appear to be.
Genera:
1. Dexter: Crime
2. True Blood: Fantasy
3. Weeds: Comedy/Drama ? I have no clue what you would call it. It is about a suburban housewife who, after her husband dies, takes to selling marijuana.
Though, these shows certainly do challenge the notion that a clear seperation of good and evil is all that exist in American shows as you stated.

For one thing she was the top selling female artist of the decade - which im sure not many people can claim. Selling over 100 million albums again another thing she can claim. Winning over 300 awards is another achievements, her videos gained a lot of criticism for being too raunchy and sexed up especially at her age and at the time of say 'Hit me baby one more time' the videos were nothing like that.
Youngest female musician in the world to have the most US selling albums another achievement. 2002 ranked the worlds most powerful celebrity and I do believe she has a star on the walk of fame
Again the issues you are having and claiming that she was a manufactured piece of plastic - just writing her off is your own personal judgement - but in reality she has achieved so much that MANY many people never have. If you put personal preference to the side for one moment and judged her in the professional view and assessed her due to her merits and not her music you might appreciate why she is a major star.

Her merits. She has done nothing to establish new sound, new style, or a new genera of music. Her music, lyrically and stylistically, is a reproduction of every pop song to come out since the 80's. She cannot even play an instrument as far as I have ever seen and her voice is mediocre when it comes to the music industry as a whole. She was good at selling the image producers created for her. Britney Spears as we know her was and is a product, and that product sold very well. It doesn't make it a groundbreaking product unless you are solely looking at monetary gains, which has more to do with her image makers than anything she ever did. The amount of sails she had does not make her an artist or a musician.
Her release brought around a new genre and from her main release other stars like Christina Aguilera came about. Again her sound id argue has changed and developed from her first album with songs like sometimes to her newer music such as toxic and womanizer - I'd say that her sound developed. Also her movie crossroads that came around with songs like Im not a girl did alter her image, I love rock and roll her cover in that film shown another side to Britney - which then got exaggerated to toxic where she played a sexy air hostess and matured more. I can see this is something we won't agree on so I think its best to leave it on a note that isn't negative

What genera would that be, Twazzle? I have yet to hear it? Other stars came about? Whoopee another reproduction of a reproduction of a reproduction. You like who you want to man, that's all you.
