Nissan, FedEx, AT&T, Comcast, DuPont, Pfizer, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Caterpillar, KPMG. Whirlpool, Embraer, Alcoa, and United HealthCare are all board members of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber lobbied for a bill just passed in the state's legislature repealing current, and banning future, municipal civil rights laws in the state. This bill, written by the religious right, was what the HRC calls a thinly veiled effort to repeal civil rights protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents of the state.

Tea Party activist Rich Swier recently said of anti-LGBT bullying: "it is peer pressure and it is healthy." He went on to compare being gay to behaviors such as smoking, underage drinking and drug abuse.

These jaw dropping statements came in response to a statement from the Florida-based Gulf Coast Gives, a group supporting civic enhancement projects in the Gulf region. While raising funds for a project to bring straight ally Hudson Taylor to Florida, Gulf Coast Gives shared some of the alarming statistics regarding anti-LGBT youth bullying, including: "77% of all bullying victims are picked on due to sexual orientation, gender identity, or the perception of either."

Swier has gone too far – his comments are dangerous and stand to have a harmful impact on youth across the country. Join us in telling Rick Swier there's nothing healthy or acceptable about bullying.
