Fred is right, it is better to know early, it will make managing the disease far easier and improve your life expectancy and quality of life.
Although, I wouldn't call a life with HIV a pleasant thing with the impact of social stigma, and the drugs are not so pleasant on the system, but much better than they were in the late 80s and early 90s. That said, being HIV positive in the US is quite a financial burden if you do not have good drug and medical coverage.
