Bert and Ernie
#1
An online petition was started this week by a man in Chicago on the website change.org. Here is his plea for people to sign the petition:

In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living. Aside from those that are committing suicide, the bullies that facilitate these tragedies need to learn that homophobia is NOT okay. They need to know that acceptance of their fellow human beings would indeed plant a seed of peace that will reverberate throughout the world. We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful by allowing Bert & Ernie to marry. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives.

PBS and representatives from Sesame Street had this to say:

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves,” said Sesame Workshop in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

I think the whole story is a disgrace to the gay rights movement and it makes a mockery of the goal we are trying to accomplish which is equality. We have much more important issues to tackle than worrying about if two fictional puppets get married on a kids tv show. Let's worry about gaining rights for actual living and breathing people before we get all "progressive" with kid tv.

EDIT: I overreacted by calling it a disgrace and mockery. The idea the guy had has merit in its own right but I just think we have bigger issues to tackle.

Just as the religious right contains people whose opinions vary from 'gays may be sinful but are definitely tolerable' to 'homosexuality is why God hates America', so too does the side of the supporters of same sex rights contain people of varying opinions and ideas. This guy had an idea, he wrote a letter, and nothing came of it aside from a response from the people he was addressing and a petition which will also amount to nothing no matter how many people sign it. Not that I'm calling this guy the liberal Fred Phelps. The point is, it takes all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas to make up a movement. I would take heart in the fact that even though you disagree with his choice of outlet, you can appreciate what he's trying to do in making children more comfortable with the idea of homosexual adults. If you think his views are radical, you can appreciate how large the supporting population of same sex rights must be for such radical outliers to exist. I'm sure PBS gets letters about how it's sacrilegious that Bert and Ernie live together as grown men, and how they're morally obligated as an American media source to teach children in a biblically cohesive manner. It hasn't prompted them to remove Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street.

I hope you don't feel like I'm calling you out on a public forum, because I sincerely don't mean to. I really appreciate how friendly this forum can be when we disagree with each other. I'm just trying to offer a different way of looking at it.

Allot of the people that are against the marriage of Bert and Ernie have said the same thing. Some others are saying we are wrong for targeting kids with our gay agenda by introducing sexuality into Sesame Street. If its wrong for puppets to marry then how do we explain the relationship between Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy? If its wrong to target kids with a message of sexuality then why do we see the frog and the pig kiss countless times? Remybussi

As a kid I saw them kissing numerous times on tv and I do believe that they did get married at some point. I agree Bert and Ernie dont need to get married. However whether we like it or not the issues of sexuality and marriage have already been introduced into the fictional world of the puppets. Some people are against Bert and Ernie getting married because they are just plain homophobic and dont want there kids exposed to the idea of gay is okay.:frown:

I was on Facebook today reading through tons of responses to the story. I wanted to see what the conservatives were saying about it. Of course they are outraged at the idea and say we are trying to corrupt kids. Here is a thread I saw posted in the One Million Moms group that stuck out to me:

Conservative mom #1: Programming for children should never include sex or sexual orientation, what is wrong with people these days?

conservative mom #2: Girl, you're tellin me. Even the internet isn't safe. Just the other night I had my husband go into the office to look up a recipe for me online. When I walked into the room I saw a bunch of pornography had popped up! He couldn't get it off the screen fast enough. Disgusting! Here all we wanted was to have a nice family meal together and even that had to be ruined by dark-sided individuals peddling their smut. It's like it's comin at us from all angles! Thank goodness my children weren't present at the time to see that.

I HATE when that happens. I know as a man every time I get online to look for food recipes I am always bombarded by porn being peddled by evil people trying to corrupt me.WinkRolleyes
