The Donkey and the Ass

Now that I've moved to Liechtenstein, can somebody please tell me why the Democrats have a donkey as their mascot while the Republicans have an elephant. Did they choose a donkey? Wasn't the lion, the whale, or even the ass available. If it was up to me I'd have a firm, curvaceous ass over a donkey any day.
