capitalism and the holidays
#1
I REALLY HATE THE CAPITALISM AND COMMERCIALISM THAT SURROUNDS THE HOLIDAYS!!!! sorry for yelling. but I'm about sick of it all. its gotten to the point that i don't even want to participate. I'm about to tell everyone to not to worry about getting me a gift, as purchasing gifts as gifts this time of year is just playing into big business' plans. im not against commercialism, just the brain washing that its "that time of the year to spend all your money on other people because its the holidays" why the f*** cant we just be giving throughout the year? why does it have to be the holidays to be nice? I'm sick and tired of all the bullshit. i don't like my brothers gf. she is a bitch. but i have to be nice because its "the holidays" i want to just stay home..........

sorry for the rant. what are your takes on it?

To an extent I agree, I don't know what it is but I'm never excited about Christmas anymore, it's just getting to be another day.

Here in the states Christmas was not celebrated until the Industrial Revolution and the start of consumerism. Then retailers got together to invent the Christmas we have.

Macy's and the rest decided to hijack Thanksgiving as the starting point of the Shopping Season.

The idea that Christmas was a 'religious' holiday is a bit off. The rest of the world that observed it made it into Carnival - bawdy. The only religious observance was mass. The puritans didn't even bother.

Since its inception, the modern tradition has been a retailers holiday, a consumer driven holiday.

Christmas was the day all of my mothers personalities showed up at once  ... so nothing Hallmark has to say has any effect on me. I do not celebrate Christmas...or Thanksgving...or any other holiday and I haven't most of my adult life. I do buy a few gifts for the people who work for me but it is because I want to and not because I have to. I am not fond of any occasion where I am "expected" to feel a certain way...I avoid any of these situations and Holidays top that list.

Christmas used to be about innocent magical happiness when I was young. But depression, darkness and disappointment seem to be the moods that predominate around this time now. The time I feel most out of touch with reality. I do enjoy hogmanay, though Smile .

Christmas is the one day of each year that we say and do the things that we should all be doing for the other 364 days of the year.

I personally think it is bullshit and only for kids and if adults truely believe in Christmas, then tell the people that mean something to you and do things for those people that mean something to you on 23rd june.....1st of August, 27th September.....WHY wait till the 25th of December every year????

I tend to use 99p stores for christmas holidays i refuse to spend alot of money on things that mean nothing to alot of people so if it means nothing then its not so bad at 99p

Err...
I like Christmas.
*Runs for hills*

Heh.
But really.
It's just a time which you spend with friends and family doing festive themed things, and give eachother some gifts.
And your under no obligation, and if your lucky, no pressure to do so.Confusedmile:
I don't do these things all year because i can't afford to get all my friends and family gifts too often, and i'm just not that social a person. I really don't mind having designated times of year to do these things.
