Nick9 Wrote:I am not sure about wild ones, but they are kept for their fur at large indoors farms :frown:

They are a size of a small rabbit, skinny with a lot of soft fur (that tends to fly out of the cage... Smile)

I know Sad .

But omgosh that one is so cute, I want to hold it and kiss it and let it sit on my shoulder like a parrot Smile .

I wish we had some :p .

Yeah, I know Smile Unfortunately they don't like to be caressed. But they could sit on your lap or hand, maybe even shoulder. Their feet are cold though
I have two, one brown, one black. They LOVE to cuddle in sleep. Bighug

one more from the net, not mine:

Who wants to see pics of Sora an Inch ago? Smile

She's 8 3/4inches now, but these pics are from when she was 8inches (shell length).

These were taken last year, after graduation I believe :p (June)
~
She used to live outside, cause we didn't have a table strong enough to support her tank, so we put her right next to the door Smile .

I had just bought that dock for her :p .

Somebody's a lazy bum :p
[Image: utf-8BU29yYS5qcGc.jpg]

This is when her shell was at it's healthiest Smile
[Image: utf-8BSU1HMDAwOTguanBn.jpg]

Such a ham :p . She loves being held in her mommy's hand Smile (no matter how much she stretchs it Rofl )
[Image: utf-8BVGhlIHR1cnRsZSBoZXJzZWxmLmpwZw.jpg]

Watch me run :p .

"Let's see how I can irritate mommy now :p "

Later that day, we were able to move her inside, cause my grandmother's husband got a table for her Smile . Her tank is bowed, so it looks small :p .

This is her, practicing her mating dance, called Fluttering with me Smile . I was like, "you flap those arms!" Smile .

Did anybody ever tell you turtles can laugh? Smile

Teasing her with a piece of food Smile

See what I mean Nick, about their intelligence? :p

*1 This picture nearly won in our annual pet competition Smile , but she lost to twin rabbit babies Sad . (I have no clue why it's blurry now. It was clear before  )

Wow, I didn't realize I had so many pics of Sora Smile . But she honestly loves the camera :p . She's a Diva like her mommy Rofl .

She got sick again soon after these pics (she had a relapse) and It last from about October(my birthday actually) to around christmas last year Sad . She's just getting rid of the remains of her old sick shell now.

I know why she get's sick easy, cause she needs direct sunlight atleast for 2hours everyday, cause otherwise her shell will deteriate. The light I have is strong, but not strong enough for her everyday, so I take her out now, and she get's atleast 2hrs of sunlight everyday Smile .

(These pics were taken on my Blackberry, so excuse the quality :p . I should've used my iPod, but I wasn't thinking :p .)

(Ps. When and if my father comes back for the summer, I'm going to demand he give me his not-in-use 80gallon tank for Sora, cause She's very quickly getting too large for this one :p . I'll make this one into a Terrarium for Tree Frogs Smile , cause my other little 5gallon tank is too small for them Sad )

Hi Odi, nice pics! How often do you need to change water in her tank?

I spent today in a zoo LOL. I am surprised how many different turtles they actually keep. I was thinking about Sora all the time Smile

Hi Nick Wavey . Omg! lol, I used to have to change it about twice every week, but now I have a more powerful filter (Had a 45EX, now a 70EX :p ), so maybe once or twice every month.

And it's not like it's the whole tank either, just roughly 20-25% of it. Only to remove built up nitrates and what not, since I don't have live plants in there. They can become poisonous if in a very high quantity, but usually that takes very long(sometimes a year), unless you don't have a filter, then it can take like a month to build up and kill off anything in there.

I'm so jealous of you :p . we don't have many types of pond turtle, only 1 native species & 1 introduced. Trachemys Scripta Elegans (Red Eared Slider Turtle) & The Terrapin species, known as the DiamondBack Terrapin(our native one). The Diamondback Terrapin was hunted and killed for it's meat a long time ago when we were first being colonized, so now they're slowly making a come back.

Although the Red Ear Sliders make it difficult, as they are bullies and very detrimental to the eco-system, so Diamondbacks are usually bullied out of their eco-system and die of starvation or stress. There's now a reserve for them so that they can flourish and not be disturbed by the Red Ear Slider. Eventually they can be re-introduced back into the wild, because their numbers are increasing, but before they were being hunted by humans and bullied by Red Ear Sliders and killed on the roads when fleeing them.

Sora and I blush Dazzler1 . Sora likes to be center of attention :p .

How did you come up with the names for your turtles?

I use to love turtles, tortoises, terrapins as a child although I was never had one. Perhaps when I get my own place I'll get one or two. I'll call one squirtle :3 Although charmander was always my choice of pokemon so maybe I should get a salamander as well.

Anyhow, some good photo of your turtles, they look awesome :3

:o , I only have one :p . But she acts like 10 of them Rofl

Her Name, Sora, orginates from the Japanese word for 'Sky' and her last name being Aoi, meaning 'Blue' . So in english her name is Sky Blue, but I just call her Sora. Plus, when I got her, I wasn't sure of her sex, so Sora being an unisex name, is what I went with :p .

I encourage people to get turtles, because like fish, they can be great stress relievers as well as lovable companions. There's a lady who managed to "tame" her two turtles and now they eat from her hand and sleep on her. Even Sora likes to sit on my lap and follow me around the house :p .

(By the way, alot of people name their turtles Squirtle or Wartortle lol :p . Also, you can't mix Salamanders/Newts/Frogs/Caecillians with turtles, as their body chemicals and predatory habits do not coincide with one another Smile , so seperate tanks Wink ).
