American Politics - The Difference Between the Presidential Candidates on Gay Issues
#21
Bowyn Aerrow Wrote:Take the word Terrorist. Used to apply to any group who used terror to get their way. Today, through repeated use of Islamic with the word Terrorist, we all pretty much think Terrorist and see a guy with a Turban. That has come through 10 years of hard use of the word terrorist while showing images of the middle East, or using the world Islamic before the word Terrorist.

Yet if we look at the language of the Patriot Acts I and II and all of their amendments, we find that terrorist is freely open to interpretation to the point where here in America just speaking out against the Government can be construed as terrorist acts

Yeah, I stopped paying attention to the word years ago as it became as meaningless a nonword as "nazi" and "socialist." It gets applied to nuns protesting the Iraqi War to Assange, and I think this is my favorite misuse of the word:

Quote:Think of “food terrorism” and what do you see? Diabolical plots to taint items on grocery-store shelves? If you are Buddy Dyer, the mayor of Orlando, Fla., you might be thinking of a group feeding the homeless and hungry in one of your city parks. That is what Dyer is widely quoted as calling the activists with the Orlando chapter of Food Not Bombs—“food terrorists.” In the past few weeks, no less than 21 people have been arrested in Orlando, the home of Disney World, for handing out free food in a park.

Food Not Bombs is an international, grass-roots organization that fights hunger. As the name implies, it is against war. Its website home page reads: “Food Not Bombs shares free vegan and vegetarian meals with the hungry in over 1,000 cities around the world to protest war, poverty and the destruction of the environment. With over a billion people going hungry each day how can we spend another dollar on war?” The Orlando chapter sets up a meal distribution table every Monday morning and Wednesday evening in the city’s Lake Eola Park.

Lately, the Orlando police have been arresting those who serve food there, like Benjamin Markeson. He was perplexed, telling me: “We think that it’s terrorism to arrest people for trying to share food with poor and hungry people in the community to meet a community need. And all we do is we come to the park and we share food with poor and hungry people. I don’t know how that qualifies as terrorism.”

Back when I used to hang out with a lot of political anarchists I'd hear them say that one reason the government was an antisocial force is how they continually attacked language by twisting and spinning words and by doing so they were actually destroying language--the very bond of society--itself. I can see their point on that.

Thanks, government, for helping me not care who is a terrorist anymore. I'd like to invent a new word to identify a real terrorist (maybe one that includes when the government acts like one) and simply a dissident or even giving out free food because they think the government should be feeding the people instead of bombing the world but I know they'd just ruin that word, too.
