Is there anything in politics...local...state...national...world...that you are happy with?

Any good news?...in your opinion?

I write my politicians a lot...I feel it is my job....and I just wrote this email to my Senator Barbara Boxer...and sent it....

Dear Ms Boxer,

I would like to take a moment to thank you for your service to our State and our Country. In a period where so many American Citizens were unhappy with all politicians...I was, and still am, proud that you have represented me and my voice. I am grateful to you for your service and am saddened to know this will be your final term.

I wish you the best. I hope you will consider a run for Governor one day.

Once again, my sincere thank you for a job well done.

It is exactly how I feel...and I think that with so much negativity...a bit of positive input on ANYTHING would be a nice balance....

Does anyone else ever contact their reps?...

I've sent a few emails to my MP, can't say I've gotten replies, but I do get a Christmas card from her every year(in a professional capacity as my MP, rather than for any personal reason).

It must make a nice change to get an email of thanks, in what I imagine must be a flood of negative and/or political issue related ones.

Currently I'm volunteering my time to help an opposition party that's hoping to at least become the Second Party in my constituency in this years General Election, and in the long run hopefully take her seat.
So perhaps the Christmas card is a little undeserved. :tongue:


I guess I am happy with the current trend of left-wing parties gaining support...but at the same time a right-wing party is gaining a lot more support, to the point where the three major centre occupying parties are also shifting slightly to the right to tempt voters back.

The only positive thing in UK politics that I can think of which could be happening in the near future is political reform.

At this point though, we have no idea how far these reforms may go, and if they'll happen at all unless the Labour Party form a stable minority coalition government after May 7th. If they do manage it though, it seems safe to say the House of Lords is likely to go, but what it will be replaced with is another matter entirely.

I was definitely going to volunteer my time to Hillary Clinton in 2016...but I am not sure I will at the moment. I really want to say I voted FOR someone instead of AGAINST the opponent...I hope that I still can say that...

My problem...I am weary of the daily emails from the Dems that use fear tactics in the title...I don't even open them anymore. I guess that works for a lot of people or they wouldn't do it but it has the opposite effect on me...it repels me.

I really am an Independent and would usually rather vote for the Green Party or even the Socialist party or whatever party Ralph Nader is running under...and they have to convince me usually to vote for them in order to block the Republican from winning...I really hate that....but not enough to help split the vote which is usually my deciding factor.

On a positive note...our Attorney General Kamala Harris will be running for Boxer's seat and I will have no problem at all voting FOR her...just as I had no problem voting FOR Barbara Boxer...so that is good news. HEY! I might volunteer to help her..not sure she will need it though...

The party I've been volunteering with is the Green Party of England and Wales, which while probably slightly to the left of your own Green Party is connected to it through the Global Greens.

From what I hear, negative campaigns irritate voters, and does turn off some voters entirely, but fear is a strong motivator. So it's probably not going to go anywhere unless politicians are forced to think of politicians of other parties as co-workers rather than sworn enemies.

I personally think the US electoral system is in desperate need of reform to escape the two party stranglehold, but it's unlikely to come in the near future.
I can only see it coming through the rise of a third party with an uncompromising approach to reform or a huge protest movement.

Hillary is rumoured to announce tomorrow.
While I'm sure I probably disagree with her on most things, I strongly hope, and think she will (perhaps even comfortably), beat whomever the Republicans wheel out.

The great thing she has going for her...she has already been torn to shreds so their arsenal is thin...

Benghazi and the emails are just not going to cut it unless you already hate her and want to see her drown...and they don't need to convince them of anything anyway.

They also have to watch the sexist card...and they WILL blow it...big time..before it is over. Each time they do..they will pay and end up painting a picture...not of her...but of themselves...as sexist assholes...to an electorate that might have otherwise been swayed. She won't have to lift a finger. Obama did it as well but he was slick and was careful not to get his hands dirty...he let his fan club do it for him.

Her other asset..Bill as First Lady.

I suspect the Republicans will nominate Jeb Bush..and someone like Susana Martinez for VP....they want the Hispanic Vote and only really play to the far right during the primaries..before they have a "change of heart" LOL

Hillary can go middle all the way because she won't have to energize the liberal base...

Idiots like Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul, Mike Pence, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum..on and on and on...THEY energize the Liberal Base LOL

I wrote my senators and rep. a few years ago. Only Sen. Merkley’s office wrote me back. I got a bit lucky in that it was a personalized letter and not a form letter. I was basically told that before Merkley became senator that a law was passed that had an unattended effect. It screwed a lot of people like me.


I have had no other reason to write them. If I ever make it to DC maybe I will contact their offices and see if I can get a tour or something.

I've only ever contacted my local MP once before, and it was at the request of a friend who had joined a particular awareness campaign (I think it had to do with saving a remote lifeboat station in the Western Isles, or something similar, I can't remember exactly now) but not long after I was pretty shocked to actually receive a letter on House of Commons headed paper thanking me for my inquiry, and he confirmed that his party had already raised the issue with the Government who were planning to review the situation.

Other than that, I try and limit my exposure to Politicians :biggrin:
