Pics I promised a while back :)
#1
I had some extra time today and I had threatened months ago to post pics of Fort Pulaski.

So I love history, and this is one of my favorite places ever. Even the story behind it is amazeing! Ill be posting pics for about 30 minutes BUUUT, if you want a good riddle, answer this question.

How does one of the most heavily armed forts of the civil war, containing garrisons of troops, food and water supplies to hopefully outlast an attacker containing plenty of ammunition fire arms surrounded by marsh (imagine attackers trying to push cannons over mud while be shot at!) and TWO motes, HOPELESSLY fall to the Union Army in a matter of hours with few casualties?
^^^ yes tis a good question that one! If you want me to tell you pm me OR research it Smile.

AAAAND now to the pictures!

walking towards the fort about to get on the man made "island" (this island has catacombs underneath to store the majority of the gunpowder in case of a stray enemy cannonball)

Aquaducts under the fort, the Union army once taking the fort thought this storage was poisoned and so they drank from the moat, however the Confederate soldiers used the moat to disperse sewage.

hope you enjoyed! I know its probably small fry compaired to the castles in Europe, but alas this side of the pond has no massive castles :*( but we got decent sized military forts Smile

One more thing to add, due to few people dieing here the battle for Pulaski is something few people know about. It is actually one of the more important battles IMO because as the fort commander noted battles over defensive fortifications will never again be fought the same way.

To give a tip on what happened Smile, it was what all these things have in common Hunley, Messerschmitt, and Atom bomb.
The father borne in 1803 first fought in the war of 1812 on the USA side.

Those are good photos. I've been to Savannah once but I didn't get to do any sightseeing Sad I was there to time a 5k race and I was pretty much stuck there. I'd like to go back and actually explore the city and hit the beach too Smile

I did a little bit of searching and couldn't find much on the tactical side of things that allowed them to capture the fort...other than constant bombardment from the sounds of things. Of course there's only so much you can find out doing a quick search on the internet. Tongue

You would think that such a critical point of the battle would be outlined, but it wasn't...at least not in that context. But it all makes sense.

I think these days no one follows any rules of engagement as they openly kill children to put fear into civilians. Then again I think that practice was put into use when the Vikings showed up too.

Me I don't like war, I mean the history is interesting and a cold reminder of how inhuman we humans can be. Thinking about it all kind of makes you wonder about what human nature really is. I know that isn't anything to do with your posts but that's where my mind goes to....

Anyway very cool stuff and neat that you know that much about all that. Smile
