You can stick your opinions....

At the weekend I was out shopping with my boyfriend and we stopped by Costa Coffee for a coffee and something to eat. While I was paying the couple (well, the woman) behind made a comment to her partner (I presume husband) about "What sort of person would get tattoos, etc. etc." (My boyfriend has a few tattoos, and I think they do look very attractive. They are not offensive or gaudy in anyway. Incidentally, I don't have any tattoos myself).

Anyway, I didn't hear this being said. I only found out why I looked around and saw my boyfriend looking rather non-plussed. When I asked him what was wrong he told me what was said and that he was biting his tounge. As we were still waiting for the coffee to arrive I thought I should have said something. Because from my perspective, the type of person (if there is a "type of person" that get's tattoos) is someone who is kind, caring, tender, loving and thoughtful.

In the end, I also bit my tounge.

Part of me regrets that, because my answer was honest (as far as my experience goes - The only other person I know with a tattoo is very deeply devoted to his wife as far as I can see). And I felt that it would prick the pomposity of this snooty/snobby person without ever being offensive.

Ultimately, was I right to have held my tounge, or should I have said something if only to at least try and remove another corner of ignorance from the world?

I doubt anything would of happend if you had said something, apart from a shrug and "Whatever".
People who "type" others tend to be quite ignorent.

I forgot to mention, the couple were retired (or looked of that age), so not in the "Whatever" generation. :p

They sound like just ignorant idiots who regardless of what you said to them wouldn't have listened or cared less.

My advice would have been to buy a cream cake and smear it in her hair/on her face.

Though perhaps that's not practical advice...would be funny though :-P lol

Yes, it was very rude.

I try to think of nice replies to show how rude they were. But, as others have said, it probably wouldn't have made any difference. It might make me feel a little better. And saying all those nice things about Paul, my boyfriend, is always good.

If they've got to their age without knowing there are lots of different sorts of people getting tattoos, it's probably a good job there's a new generation taking over?

Indeed, but maybe I'm just surprised by them. My 90yo granny is more enlightened than them.

What troubles you more, that that woman thinks the way she does or that she was rude enough to say what she thinks in earshot? If its manners you are concerned about, you were right to stick to the high-ground and bite your lip. If its what she thinks that upsets you, then I doubt being harangued by a stranger would change her mind.

You should have complained and maybe in apology they might have given you your beveredges for free, or ofcourse if you complained too much a nice sneeze muffin Tongue

Tattoo's are awesome, I do admit they can look stupid deppending on what you get, but tattoo's can mean things, tell stories etc... It's piece of art on the body
