So in this case, I was the problem more so than he. Basically a lack of accepting what's in front of me for what it is, and jumping to conclusions...making assumptions....but also a lack of communication, that I think was a bit of both of us... Anyway I had got good advice I could have better understood/taken in hindsight but didn't and went up the creek without a paddle.
So hopefully I won't make the same mistake twice...
