It's way easier to restrict your calorie consumption than to try and burn it by excercise after you've consumed it.
30 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training, for instance would shed about 350 calories. 30 minute of cardio kickboxing, some 300 calories. (Asuming a 70 kg person, normal, blah blah blah)
Do look at foods that pack 300-350 calories. You'll get depressed, probably, noticing how easy it is to consume them vs how hard it is to burn them with those relatively demanding exercises.
I don't think Si means a specifc "diet" but simply controling what he eats (which is actually not so simple, as we all know). To lose one pound per week you have to burn 500 more calories per day than you consume (1 pound of fat = 3500 calories). Ideally you'd have to combine a proper diet and a good amount of work out. But the food will always be the critical factor. Do that, and 70% of your job is already done.
Now, diabetes puts you in another area a bit more complicated but at the same time it can be easier. Easier cause you're forced by the disease to control the food you eat. Harder cause even more than for normal folks, keeping your Insulin levels in check is critical (Insulin removes glucose from the blood and promotes is use within the cell, but if there's an excess of it, be sure that Insulin will promote sugar to fat turnover via the TCA cycle and lipogenesis).
