I was scolded by my former personal trainer in the gym today. I can't blame him though. I didn't perform alternate dumbbell bicep curl properly today.
"Jay, you're swinging those dumbbells too much. You are doing it wrong from the first set to the last. Those dumbbells are too heavy for you. I suggest you to reduce the weight. By swinging, you do not contract your muscles and basically will gain nothing. You only use momentum on the last few reps." He went lengthy on it.
Oh, boy. I nodded.
I reduced 5kgs from my dumbbells. Then I continued my bicep curl.
"Jay, that's not how I taught you to do bicep curl. What you did can be consider as cheating... If you continue to do it this way, your biceps will not get any bigger." He went on and on.
The gym became quiet. My face turned red.
Another gym member then spoke in. "If it's too difficult to perform the bicep curl, do it this way." He demonstrated a few repetitions of bicep curl at me.
I then mimicked the way he did in front of him. My former personal trainer still stood nearby to observe. "Is this correct?"
"Correct." He nodded.
I was embarrassed but continued to do my bicep curl. "Focus Jay, focus ..." I kept telling myself.
Bicep curl was the last workout for today. I then went to my locker to pack my stuff.
Few seconds later, my 6ft tall personal trainer walked past me to go to the rest room. But in the middle of going to the restroom, he tapped my left shoulder. Gently.
I think he knows that he was quite 'preachy'. I wasn't mad at him. I know it was my mistake to begin with. But yes, I was embarrassed.
When he came out from the restroom, he stopped by at the locker room and told a few jokes to the members who were in the room. I kept myself busy packing my stuff. I didn't say a thing. I know why he made those jokes. He wanted to break the ice with me. But I wasn't able to response. My mind went blank.
He then went back to his office. I went to his office to say goodbye and he replied without turning his head. He was busy surfing his Facebook.
I'm not mad at him. I know my personal trainer is very proud of me due to my history, commitment and passion. He always boasts about me to the professional bodybuilders and other gym members. He sees me as a prime example. He was looking forward to see my next evolution to become a lean muscular man. He trust me very much that he asked me to watch over the gym (He owns it) for a few hours on last Friday because he wanted to see a doctor.
It was necessary for him to nag me as I didn't perform the workout properly. If he didn't utter a word, I probably would continue the wrong method for the rest of my life. But yeah, I was kind of shock with the nag because I haven't been lectured for ages.
So anyway, I have sent him a message to his mobile phone. "Sorry for practicing bicep curl the wrong way. Thanks for correcting it. I appreciate it very much. Thanks!".
