I can very much jump in and say I've seen this as well, it's definitely happening. I've been around the net long enough to remember that if you were at all standing up for gay people or gay rights-- you were so alone in that spotlight that everyone, by default, would presume you were gay instantly for doing it.
Now, I barely even have to say anything. Whether it's the discussion area under a news article, or a youtube video comment chain, or a post on facebook.... scores of straight people seem to have gotten there first and shot down any blatantly homophobic people who made offensive comments about LGBT.
It's definitely a big, and palpable change, even in just the past 10 or 15 years.
