Spoiler:
The thing a submarine, jet fighter and nuclear bomb have in common are those examples were the first of their kind and they changed the rules of engagement.
The father was a rifled musket produced by Americans first in 1803, put a spin on the bullet via rifled barrel, change the shape of the projectile and you get longer range and more accuracy. Prior to that weapon lines of soldiers would stand and shoot at each other, their weapons were so inaccurate it was about the only way to get a hit.
The battle for the fort was the same, only the Union side discovered how to do this with cannons .
Before this, the longest range cannons were the biggest. Fighting a Fort was hard because you had slow moving smaller cannons. You would be within their range before you had even set up.
Not even mentioning the forts cannons are already lined in. This particular fort was next to the coast and approaching it you would need to move an army over marshes. AND the fort had elevation advantage to boot. If this had been a conventional battle, Union Casualties would have been HUGE ^_^ but the Union had a Ace up their sleeves This was the battle they played it.
the rifled barrels the Union brought out ranged even the forts big guns not to mention were MUCH more accurate. The Fort was left helpless, they could neither move or shoot back. The commander surrendered after about 30 hours.
