Satan is attacking US
#21
No offense, but I'm glad I'm not American :3 .

It sounds so strange, as we don't have the same form of law as the Americans, more or less a variation of the British law system.

Just to clear this up;

Democrat - For the people/peoples choice

Republican- Conservative/"Best" interest of the people

Am I right? Because for us, it's all about the people here and if we developed something close to Republicans, we'd probably cease to exist. (though, we do have our own problems right now.)

From what I've read, Mitt Romney is the choice it seems over there, but my thing is. Why can't Obama stick around longer? I mean how long was Bush in office? Like 8-9 years? And he wasn't half as good as Obama is in my opinion.

I feel like Barack's being pushed out after like 4 years, because of all the crap society is going through right now and they need someone to blame. Obama so far has been the most "real" president and actually has the people's interests at heart.

I guess I'm confused why people are voting for these republicans, if in the end, they're probably going to get their pooch screwed by the same people they've voted for  . Politics isn't something I find to a very fair system to alot of people.

First you should know that politics doesn't make much sense because it's not based on reason. Our politics tend to be pretty Jerry Springer, our news media only pretends to be informative, there's a lot of fear mongering, and the typical person's attention span tend to encourage simplistic buzz words and bumper sticker slogans.

Second, you should know that our mainstream politics are ALL conservative by global standards. However, FOX and most Republicans these days tends to be right wing extremists who call anyone even slightly left of them leftists if not downright socialists. Democrats tend to be more right of center, globally speaking. Of course big money rules both parties (as I've heard more than once, "we have the best democracy money can buy"), including Obama.

As for President Obama, he is (like all presidents more or less) a scapegoat for all the problems, especially as people want IT FIXED NOW (we're pretty much a society that even gets impatient with microwave cooking :tongueSmile. I do believe many don't like him because he's part black and represents the waning of white privilege, though I wouldn't hazard a guess on how many this describes (I just know I've met some like this, including in my own family). What really distresses me is how many people hate Obama for all the wrong reasons (like hating him for false issues like his birth certificate or things he couldn't do because of all the opposition against him while completely ignoring legite problems).

Many partisans simply don't like him because he's in the "wrong party" and would actually praise him if he were a Republican but otherwise was exactly the same (likewise, Obama would receive harsh criticism and opposition from many of his current partisan supporters for the same reason), even his health care reforms (which were promoted by a right wing think tank as an alternative to "Hillary Care" and were promoted by Republicans like Romney with a lot of conservative support and liberal condemnation at the time). For more on this, go here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11009379/ns/...udy-finds/

And this is just the SHORT answer. Wink

Anyway, there are Republican politicians I can stomach, but they've gotten especially toxic since Obama took office. I'm mystified and frightened how radical they've become bringing the fringe into the mainstream and trying (sometimes succeeding) in legislating it. The only ray of hope is that many Republicans won last time promising jobs and they've failed to deliver while wasting so much time fighting gays, abortions, and reaffirming God in politics which they were NOT voted in to do (and many independents now, including at least a few moderate Republican voters, feel tricked and angry over it), so I hope that haunts them in 2012.

Unfortunately, there's a strong fundamentalist strain in the USA and it has enough of a base (with money and votes) that politicians pander to them (even Democrats avoid ticking them off), and we've endured things like the Satanic Panic (which even Al "Captain Planet" Gore got in on) so I'm not entirely confident that the right wing extremists that make up most of the Republican choices are going to be defeated in 2012.

Wow Pix :o . So different from how we operate.

I'm still a teensy bit confused, but I think I get the jist of what you're saying.

You're very well informed, but I guess you have to be since it's affecting you lot over there.

And you're right, Politics doesn't seem to be based on Reason, though it would probably be better if it was.

Thanks for the lesson Kiss3

Glad it helped. Confusedmile:

Feel free to ask me for clarification. I don't mind going into detail, it's just a lot of people would rather someone "gets to the point" rather than explaining all the little details and giving details could also be seen as (or even cause) derailing of the thread.

i think Pix brings up a good point and expanding on it:

security:
-if someone wants to blow up something and has enough money it will happen no matter if a Republican or Democrat president is in office, 4example: taking your shoes off at the airport dosnt help any.
-right now the US military budget is way out of line compared to any other country.
Jobs:
-Little the government can do is a planet wide recession. For example if Europe goes bad everyone will suffer to some degree.
-What ever method the government uses to attempt to jump start the economy, the over all US economy is much larger than what the government can handle. Only time will fix it.
-economic moderation:
both Bush and Obama have spent a lot of money and driven up the deficit. Clinton was the only president that had the budget under control. No one seems to like Clinton.

there are other issues but putting the focus on religion and moral conservatism distracts the voters.

I'm into U.S. politics because they can be extremely entertaining at times, especially the republicans. Sarah, Rick and Newt have made my day more than once. Just glad it doesn't effect me. Big Grin The debates are very much like Germany's Next Top-model, because it's all about posing, posture and charisma, only lacking a swimwear contest. What is actually said hardly matters at all. The speeches sometimes almost sound like they mean something, but then so do Modern Talking songs.
I wonder if some of these politicians are genuinely stupid or just acting dumb to get their rating up(well, it works).
