I saw this section of forums and started to think about how I told my parents that I was gay. It wasnt easy task but they have known 8 years now.

First I told my mother because we have always been closer than I have been with my father. I had just moved out of home and had my first serious relationship - I felt that I have to tell them and I got tired of them both asking about girls I date.

She was picking me up from bus stop. I decided to tell her during the car trip. So I did just that - her first reaction was short silence and few tears. After that she said "well... I have always somehow known it..." and started asking if I was dating a guy and all stuff related. After a while she asked me how the hell are we going to tell this to your father? After some talk we decided that she would tell him after the weekend once I was gone. Didn't have any issues with mother and I was really happy about that.

Mother called me monday evening and said that I think your fathers' heart stopped beating for moment when I told him and that he wasn't happy at all. For little over year my dad didnt speak to me at all and was never home when come to visit. After all that time he suddenly called me and asked if me and my partner wanted to come there next weekend. After that he has been normal and talks to me and my bf like normal people.

I was prepared that I might never see my parents again after the weekend I was telling them but it turned out all right. Even tho it took some time for my father.

It is understandable a bit that parents a shocked at first ... my mother told me years ago that is hard to see for parents that they have no chance for grandchildren. A second point is that they have the fears that their gay children have to stay their life along alone ... but when they see, that the children are in a relationship.. and happy... it will become more and more OK for them... and I think this will happen to your ( and all ) parents, too.
