My brief response:
1) You were justified in investigating his phone. He "telegraphed" his guilt. You confirmed it.
2) I've said before: "Cheating is doing something you wouldn't do in front of your partner."
Doesn't matter if he would've gone on the date or not. The texts were done behind your back and no matter what, that's a betrayal because he wouldn't have sent those in front of your face.
Oh....one more thing, FUCK open relationships.
