The Arab culture has a lot of respect for differently abled people and I usually get treated well, but there are some that I want to say to 'dude, my ears work and so does my brain, no need to speak slower, louder and use simple words!'.
Also, hooking up isn't that easy

People are generally uneducated about persons living with observable disabling conditions. I remember I walked up to this friend referenced above and I grabbed the weld modification on his chair for his attachments and he gave me the meanest look. Of course I didn't even pick up on what his problem was until we became friends enough that he explained that one should not just touch a person's wheelchair or other technology without permission just like you wouldn't touch anyone else's body without permission. It is rather frustrating when people assume they are helping when they grab hold and start pushing me. It's the equivalent of being picked up and carried somewhere.

His dad custom welded these cool industrial fastners and has fitted a number of items to attach to the chair, like a lap table and other items for operating a pc or doing other activities. I said it's kinky because the fastner sticks up and out like an erect penis and we joke about modding sex toys to attach. He's straight and cannot perform sexually with his penis, so even though it is a joking matter between us, it is truly a very serious matter of course. He's a great sport about it and practices his "I only wanna make you happy" crack about it all the time for when he's out dating, etc etc etc

He sounds like a really great guy. I'm a bit disappointed about the kinkiness though, was hoping for inspirations for my mods :tongue:. I am thinking of modding mine for a camera though  mile:

I admit it weirds me out a little, but I'm overly nice to people (even if they are a jerkface) of all types so HOPEFULLY it doesn't show. I do get nervous around the disabled, people shorter and smaller than me (I'm 5'11" 300 lbs) so I get jerky and fidgety. I'm overly concerned I'm going to hurt them. Which is an irrational fear because the worst I've ever done to something small is stepped on a cat's tail. lol
Never really had a close relationship with someone with a physical or mental disability, but I always take stuff like that into consideration when interacting with them, so I never come across as an inconsiderate jerk, I hope...

Totally understandable and common. The main thing to remember is that often the best approach is to simply ask with kindness and for the most part simply direct your mind to think of someone living with a disabling condition as any other person without one as much as possible.

you could also consider wearing a T-shirt with "Gentle Giant" printed on it

While in Australia the Olympics are literally televised 24/7 with live events and replays of other event right through out the day, the Paralympics are relegated to 5 minutes of updated in the the Sports News each evening. Would love it if it got the same attention as other sporting events because their sporting feats are above and beyond those of able bodied athletes and unfortunately much more under appreciated.
Australia usually does very well in the Paralympics and we are proud of our athletes, but which we could watch them like they ere the Olympics.
