Being so flat, the water's edge ebbs and flows quite a distance in relation to the verticle height of the water, which is on average only 3 M deep.
That is why there are no trees.
Bloem dam is primarily an irrigation and over-flow control dam,
It get's it's water from the Vaal dam much higher up the Vaal (Africkaans for grey) river.
The Vaal dam is primerily a water supply for the reef, including Johannesburg, and an irrigation supply dam
