Fact Of The Day
#31
Humans don't just shrink with age. They shrink EVERY DAY.
Humans shrink and regain height daily, sometimes as much as 3/4 of an inch in one day. When we move throughout the day, the fluid disks in in our spinal column compress and we shrink. When we rest at night our backbones reabsorb the fluid and our height comes back.

As our bodies degenerate over time, our ability to grow back our height diminishes over time. This contributes to the loss of height that occurs as we age.

Why is extorting money called “blackmail?”

When the English owned the majority of the farmland in Scotland, they charged the Scottish farmers rent called “mail,” from a Scottish word meaning rent or taxes. Payments were normally made in silver, and this was called “white mail.”

When a farmer could not make his payments, the payment had to be made in produce, and this was called “black mail.” During the threat of eviction, some landlords demanded more produce than was actually needed to cover rent, which coined the term “blackmail” in its present negative connotation.

The world's largest coffee pot is located in Davidson, Saskatchewan. It measures 24 feet tall, is made of sheet metal and could hold 150,000 cups of coffee.

Just enough for Rainbowmum in the morning!

In the 1700′s, you could sell a fresh deerskin of a buck for one dollar – hence, the term “buck.”

You can overdose and die from coffee.
There is such a thing as a lethal dose of caffeine. Medical literature contains reports of people dying from ingesting large amounts of caffeine, often through unconventional means, such as injecting caffeine straight into the bloodstream or having a coffee enema (literally putting coffee in your butt!).

It takes ten grams of caffeine in one sitting to kill a person, which would literally take between 80 and 100 cups of coffee, which is pretty hard to do.

Seniors who drink a cup of coffee before a memory test score higher than those who drink a cup of decaffeinated coffee.

The ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, should always be written as QE2. QEII is the actual queen.

“Not worth his salt"
At one time soldiers in ancient times were paid, in part, with a ration of salt called a salarium, from the Latin word “sal” meaning salt. If a soldier’s performance was not up to standard, the soldier was said to be “not worth his salt.” Later, when salt was replaced with money to purchase the salt, this money was called a salarium. Later, salarium came to mean the wages themselves which led to what we now call one’s pay a “salary.”

It was the accepted practice in Babylonia 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in- law with all the mead he could drink.

Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the “honey month” or what we know today as the “honeymoon.”
