What we have here is a discrepancy in currency exchange rate.

except the australian dollar is better than the US dollar

1 AUD = 1.04 USD

petrol here is about $1.5 AUD a liter, there is 3.785 litres per gallon

if it was just the exchange rates then australians would be paing less than americans

$3.29 around here. Still too expensive in my book. I remember paying $.99 a gallon when I was 16.

Not really. The issue is Taxation.

In the USA there is very little gas tax, thus the price reflects better the price of oil and what the oil companies are charging.

Oh and Australia and UK and other places are all socialist hell holes that have horrible things like Health Care paid out of the taxes.

So in the USA the real tax you pay depends on how much medical insurance you have. If you are willing and able the tax is cheap, of course don't get in an accident or you may end up with so many medical bills you loose your house.

Those Socialists don't loose houses for an accident. Instead they all pay more at the pump.

This is why we in the USA can't have Obama Care or Socialized medicine, we know everybody has the freedom to end up with unpayable medical bills, lose their house, end up homeless because homelessness leads to health.
