Try Housekeeping in Old Virginia for a very interesting cookbook with a good dose of American history.
The recipes still work, and it's fascinating to learn how things were done before we had so many modern appliances and such.

Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King
A very bittersweet book. I read this first around the time I was 14 years old and its funny how I look at it now with completely different eyes in my adult years. Quite a sad book really.
