Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant; Published by The Century Co.; Copyright, 1895 by Julia D. Grant.

I will never forget the delight I felt at being born a telepath in Harlem in 1946. My best friend Tommy Mullins was also a telepath. We walked the streets of Harlem with a freedom which grownups did not know. We pretended to be deaf mutes since our mothers could see us wherever we were. We memorized everything including our feelings and the routes we took to get around.

At 6, we added Joey Leonard who was tougher than us. We felt invincible when we were together. Joey wanted to go to Grant's Tomb and dance on Julia's casket. We wanted to annoy Ulysses and make him get up and chase us away from their tomb. As we climbed up on her casket someone yelled "You kids better get out of here!" We almost peed in our pants and scrambled for the back door to the museum. Outside we laughed our asses off hoping it was just some guard's voice. We stared at the small monument to Grant's horse and vowed to wake up the dead the first chance we got.

I can't wait to read Grant's Memoirs. I wonder if he mentioned the three of us.. I do hope he forgives us before we meet him and his wife in heaven.

Don't forget. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. Gay men must be better educated than straights to survive these days. We are men who love men. The basis for human civilization.

I've been reading Charles Martin's translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, I find his attempts to make it feel contemporary sometimes ridiculous (terms like one night stand don't really fit the setting of the poem in my mind), but it is otherwise a pretty lively and quite pleasing translation of a timeless work.
