This whole thing began because a local newspaper made a note in which it called the director of another newspaper “puñal” (=faggot), and this other person responded with another note saying that everyone in that other newspaper were “maricones” (=faggots). The Supreme Court of Justice of México is calling this kind of words “hate speech”.

I think they'd be better served by promoting positive images of their community as well as negative images of people like those newspapers look terrible for being immature at best (seriously, that's so Jerry Springerish). Here in the States I think it has helped that we have a growing list of positive gay role models (granted, it tends to be stereotypical, and the lesbians tend to be made in part to titillate men, but they're still sympathetic), AND highly successful flicks (and other media) that condemns bigotry (X-Men, Harry Potter, etc), and more and more are standing against bigotry, from big time pop singers to professional athletes (ETA: and more of them have been coming out as bi or gay as well). THAT'S what I think they should try in Mexico, so that papers would be ASHAMED to talk like that in the first place.

Otherwise, it seems to inspire a backlash because they feel they're censored, which creates anger, and it actually ADDS power to the word (as it's so bad you can't publicly say it, which implies to BE gay is that bad, at least it would to plenty of people).

You said it. I assume it's nationwide here in the U.S.A. (clear channel) that started to butcher classic rock songs the last few years. Examples would be:

1- The Who- Who Are You. "Ahhhh who the edit are you? Or even worse just delete a verse.

2- Warren Zevon- Lawyers Guns And Money- "Send Lawyers Guns And Money. The..... (pause of silence) ......has hit the fan!"

Censorship is just plain wrong. If you don't like it you have a choice not to listen.

Yes as everyone else british has said, faggots is also a food stuff here, not a very nice one but still. ...
Though i think the other term for faggot is the least nice insults(it has a sharp agressive edge, not as bad as "fairy" lets say. No words shouldnt be banned

Well, I don’t know anyone who has eaten faggots jajaja until very recently I discovered that fags were also cigarettes in the UK.

It´s not the word “faggot” but “puñal” and “maricón”. I personally don’t feel much sympathy for the LGBT official movement in México; I already had a bad experience with them once. Anyway, I think this is the most ridiculous thing they´ve done, I really hope they don’t pass this law as it will open a legal precedent for this kind of nonsense (although we don’t use a common law system in México, so something like this won’t be that bad)

Note: I added the note in english in the first post
