I saw a report yesterday about some new super-fancy skiing goggles which had gone on sale. But because manufacturers are so scared of litigation if something goes wrong, the packaging contains these words:

Years ago, there was a news in our newspaper about an American woman who had put her cat in the microwave oven to let her fur dry... The news said that she then sue the company who made the oven and she WON!

The sad thing is, many people still remember that and when someone sues McDonalds that they serve too hot coffee, or US cops are willing to take a small kid to a court because he bumped into an old lady with his little bike, or a jury sentences someone "because the Bible says..." - people here just say, What do you want, they are Americans, they put cats in microwave ovens...

The woman who sued McDonald's over the hot coffee spill nearly died from the severe burns she received though, plus it came out in the lawsuit that McDonalds had been instructed several (over 100) times that their coffee was being kept at heats that were not safe in contravention of state food safety regulations.



Would you not sue if McDonald's coffee did this to you?

Be cautious of these news stories about "frivolous" lawsuits, often it is propaganda promoted by corporate interests in order to undermine the power of the average citizen to seek justice for corporations that recklessly abuse their clients.

Hm. You know you have to boil water to make coffee. When your partner makes you tea and you knock the cup into your lap, will you sue? I fail to see the difference. You won't be served warm tea or coffee in any other restaurant either. At least I hope so.
