Going to bars alone?

So, I am freshly out of the closet (again) if that makes any sense...basically I was with a slightly homophobic guy for 4 years (I know, I know, I don't know why I stayed either - young love, eh?) Trouble is, I'm not 'out' enough that I know...anyone, in the gay community really. I wouldn't feel comfortable hitting on girls in front of my current peer group. They wouldn't have a problem, but it would be embarrassing.

I'm quite confident approaching new people and can make friends easily. So I'm wondering, would it be completely sad going to the local gay bar alone, and seeing who I find? Obviously, its hard hitting on femme girls, or even girls in general, in 'straight' places, and besides that I would love to reengage with the community even just as friends and meeting people.

Bring a crossword; or a book; or a computer so you don't just sit there staring at people.

But be approachable, use "open" body language. Engage people. Don't let it look like you're more concerned with your crossword; book; computer. They are just props. You might even use them as ice breakers....

I haven't gone to bars [gay or straight] by myself before, and
if I did, I met up with friends.

But you don't necessarily need to go to a gay bar to meet gay folk.
Are there any local GLBT groups or resources in your area?

When I used to be involved in community stuff back in High School/
Community College I always volunteered for groups like GLSEN
[I think thats the right acronym for that group, lol] and I met a few
people.

They usually need volunteers for a variety of things. Well, at least
the one here in the States. Working in the mail room, running booths,
or helping out in their events. I met a bunch of cool people while doing
that.
