Local cuisine where you live

Tell us about a dish that's native to the region where you currently reside. Why do you (or your neighbors) like it?

For me, it's the giant burrito. The first burritos may have been served in Mexico (no one knows for sure if it was locals or migrant workers in California), but it took Californians to make burritos popular in the U.S.

It's a great mix between a sandwich and a one-dish meal when you're on the go and tired of burgers.

I have no idea what is native to California I have pretty much assumed that the native populations were displaced long ago and Mexican and Europeans just sort of moved in and took over.

We have Panda Express - its pretty good... Or would Mc Donald's be more the native food? It must be, there are 5 Mc Donald's stores within 1 mile of each other. :biggrin:

I come from Madeira Island and the generosity of nature combined with the ingenuity of the people that live here resulted in wonderful cuisine.

My favorite is this:

The wonderful Espetada (or the local Shish Kebab).

It's very simple (just beef in a stick) but a true feast for the senses.

this region is very much known for seafood especially another town down the way which has famous oysters (ive never tried tried them and dont much fancy them)

New Mexico is well known for having red and green chili, which you'll never experience as well unless you get it right from the source. And seriously, we put it on everything here. It's even available as a topping at every fast food stop. Green is all that really matters though. The red stuff is like the little cousin who just tags along and tries to be cool. We still love lil' red though.

There's also all the usual Mexican dishes. It's all just done better here. It's "New" Mexican instead of "Old" Mexican. Who wants old food? Not me.

I just miss seafood. Don't ever eat fish here if you're used to better stuff from the coast. I'm warning you in advance.

Yorkshire does have its own cuisine but just for a week id love to live where Mexican food is the norm - love the stuff,,love it so much I burnt my stomach lining with my hot Mexican chicken special lol,,,didn't laugh when the hospital camera went down my throat though to check my acid backlash Smile

Let take you gurls on an Adventure;

So on Good Friday, we traditionally eat Codfish & Potatoe and Hot Cross Bunz, however I don't eat Fish personally, so I take it out;

We typically eat Gulash a lot, especially as children, but it's really good :p and pretty simple, and probably not even Bermudian, but hey :p

We eat Fish Cakes a lot as well, usually on Good Friday as well;

and a slew of other stuffs :p . Lots of fish though, which kinda sucks for me lol, being from a Seafood island, but whatevers.

I'm not sure about Goulash per se, but Fish Cakes and Codfish and Potatoe and Hot Cross Bunz as far as I know are Bermy.

Oh and I forgot!! Every Kid who grew up before me and in my generation loves these! They're a local DELICACY!!!!

Although, the people who originally made Johnny Bread when I was growing up passed on and so no one really makes it quite the same any more T^T .

They always came in Triangles and were just sooo good. I would beg my momma to get me one every time we went to the bakery (which was kind of a lot lol)

Tomaticán

a bunch of tomatoes macerated in sugar and salt, stewed with onions and meat....right to the very end you add basil and corn...

a nicely multi-coloured green, red, yellow, brown dish...some people add potatoes..

(OK, a lot of colors is clear indicator of French influence...but French like their cooked tomatoes rather differently..)

...it's one of the most common summer meals and many many people enjoy it...including me..the trick, as in anything with tomato is getting the salt and the sugar right..otherwise it will end up tasting uber acid and not good..if done correctly it's really good tasting..
