Dates are interesting in my opinion, they allow you to meet and see if there are any connections with the boy that you have met.
I have had quite a few dates in the past and I find that they either turn out really bad or really good. I've had guys turn around and say that they don't want a second date because I'm "too much of this" or "too much of that". But you shouldn't give up on dating.
You'll get your break very soon trust me, I think the most important factor is to really make sure that before you have this first date, question the boy as to if the boy is really interested in meeting you. Their interested has to be very high in my opinion, otherwise there is no reason to catch up with them, I've met a few guys that are only interested in having their food payed for.
Just take caution and really ask yourself if they are actually interested in meeting you. Once you find that boy that is fascinated in your online personality to meet you, then you know that you have a high probability in getting that second date (:
